Mr. Handy and Mr. Gutsy robots are iconic elements within the Fallout universe, particularly prominent in both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. The Mr. Handy model, created by General Atomics International before the Great War, was designed primarily for domestic purposes. These robots are often encountered throughout the Capital Wasteland and the Mojave Desert, providing assistance in tasks such as housekeeping and maintenance. Notably, the player encounters Mr. Handy units in places like Tenpenny Tower and Rivet City, where they perform various roles, from concierge duties to general upkeep. In Fallout: New Vegas, the Lucky 38 and Novac Motel feature these helpful robots, often equipped with the Robotics Expert perk, which allows the Courier to deactivate or hack them for strategic advantages.

Mr. Gutsy robots, on the other hand, represent the militarized version of the Mr. Handy, boasting enhanced combat capabilities. These fearsome automatons, equipped with plasma weapons and flamethrowers, were designed for combat and can be found in hostile environments like the RobCo Facility and Fort Bannister in Fallout 3. The Mr. Gutsy units are more formidable adversaries compared to their Mr. Handy counterparts, often requiring the player to employ skills and perks such as Guns, Energy Weapons, or the Robotics Expert to effectively neutralize them. In Fallout: New Vegas, the presence of Mr. Gutsy robots in locations like Nellis Air Force Base and the REPCONN Test Site further emphasizes their role in pre-war military operations, making them a significant challenge for players exploring these areas.

The lore surrounding these robots is enriched by numerous in-game references and items. In Fallout 3, the player can discover RobCo Fun magazines, which hint at the technological marvels behind these creations. Additionally, the schematics for the Bottlecap Mine and the Railway Rifle reflect the ingenuity of a world that once relied heavily on robotic assistance. The New Vegas world is equally dense with lore, where items like the Sunset Sarsaparilla Stars and the distinctive Snow Globe collectibles provide deeper immersion into the game's history. Encounters with characters such as Raul Tejada, a ghoul mechanic, reveal personal stories tied to the legacy of these robots. Whether assisting in the player's journey or posing a significant threat, Mr. Handy and Mr. Gutsy robots remain integral to the immersive and richly detailed world of Fallout.

I don't think he was there as a form of protection. I think he was there as a sort of pet. Think about it. These ghouls were probably old enough to have had a Mr. Handy at some point in their life and the novelty of owning one isn't lost on them, so they probably just love robots for the joy and entertainment purpose.

He wasn't their protection, he was their alarm system...

He wasn't protecting them, they were protecting him, atleast until he decided enough was enough.

I wasn't even tempted to do that, I have a real soft spot for the Ghouls in Fallout

Even though it can be pretty easily taken out, I could see the benefit of having a security guard that always on duty that has a pretty decent weapon.

Perhaps he wanted to try swimming in lava by cop?

An alarm with a gun, is better than one without.

He was to distract any invader, so they could get the drop on them.

He was just a early alarm system that didn't need sleep or food

His purpose was intimidation because anybody who keeps a crazy murderous robot around probably can take you out.

I think they keep him there as an intimidation factor 😂 like for example what if u was a fallout dweller and u came acroos them u would be like wtf how do ghouls got a working robot working 😂

His chassis exploding gives everyone a warning i guess.

It could be that the ghouls dont care to fight and so put up "defenses" so people are warded off from starting shit. The ghouls can definitely kick ass but they simply dont want to.
[Edit]: Fixing the word 'Simply'

I think it's like a guard dog. Yes they can handle themselves well but they need to sleep and don't wanna be on edge
