Job Fair Tips | How to Make a Positive Impact at Job Fairs

Показать описание
Jessica shares her best practices on how to make a positive impact with potential employers at job fairs.
At job fairs I have been approached by both great applicants who make a wonderful impression on me and I've also been approached by those who maybe leave a little bit more of a poor impression.
Let's break it down into three parts. First, we're going to talk about the things you need to do to prepare for the job fair before you go. Second, we'll discuss what to do while you're at the job fair; and third, we'll discuss following up with an employer.
Before going to a job fair there are three things you need to do to prepare. First, you'll need to clarify your goals and determine exactly what it is that you're looking for.
Second, you'll want to prepare a resume. While this may be obvious to some, you'd be surpassed at how many people show up without a resume, and it's very important to employers. Make sure to bring extra copies so you can hand them out to multiple people.
Third, you'll want to think of a few questions to ask the employers that you speak with. This helps them know that you're engaged and interested in the jobs and the opportunities that they have to offer.
When you're at the job fair there are four important points to remember. First, make sure you look professional and well put together. While this may not mean that you need to dress up in a suit and tie, it's always best to follow the rule of thumb of dressing one level up from the position that you're looking for.
Second, greet people with a smile. Employers want to see that you have a good attitude about work.
Third, greet employers with confidence. This important as they want to see that you have confidence in yourself and in your abilities. However, make sure that you're not being too cocky as this can leave a bad impression with an employer.
Fourth, show enthusiasm by asking pertinent questions. This goes back to what we discussed in preparing for the job fair. Make sure to use these questions to engage the employer in conversation and leave a positive, lasting impression.
After a job fair is over, one of the most important things to remember is to follow up with employers. Make sure to take a business card or contact information before you leave. Hopefully, an employer will be contacting you, although when you follow up on your own it shows that you can take initiative and that you have motivation to work which are both positive qualities in the eyes of any employer.
