I like the G1 comic version the best. King Grimlock was stupid, but Hi-Q explains it all just after Grimlock changes to his powermaster form, “Grimlock, like Scorponok struggles to walk the line between good and evil” and his profile actually states that he detests the weak, but hates bullies, which is why he chooses the autobots over the Decepticons, so he can bully the bullies.

The Marvel version of Grimlock - he's not really pretending to be dumb, he has a problem with his speech pattern, which is mentioned in the comic.

FOC/Aligned Grimlock has such a interesting and understanding backstory on the character of Grimlock. (Note: I consider FOC and TF: Prime/Aligned to be in the same universe. RID's Grimlock is a separate character that adopted a "Grimlock" name.)
As we know, Grimlock and Optimus have such different methods on how to defeat the Decepticons. While Prime favors caution, Grimlock firmly believes on "rushing in before the enemy can react". The only similarity between the two of them was their desire to end the war and bring freedom. Prior to his experimental torture, he and the other members of the Lightning Strike Coalition were very well known disregarding Prime's more cautious decisions on warfare. Often disobeying orders and as we see in FOC, abandoning their position.

The Aligned comics provided insight as to "why" he abandoned his post. It turns out Grimlock has suspicions the Decepticons were getting their supplies from an unknown source. This suspicion was largely due to the endless swarms of Decepticon attacks which is considered weird given how Energon supplies should be low on both sides. He sent his scout, Swoop, to locate this source at the Sea of Rust. When Swoop never respond back, he and his team abandoned their post to find Swoop. Grimlock and his team eventually found the new Energon source and Shockwave's experiments. But they were ultimately captured and experimented on. Grimlock remainrf concious throughout the entire process, hence why in the FOC game, he tells Swoop, "I remember everything".

After their experimental redesign/torture, they became outcasts. While they wear the Autobot insignia, they know they are being judged for being different. They were being treated different. Shockwave's experiment changed them. While it did upgrade them into more powerful versions of themselves, they weren't being treated like "true Autobots". Even after the war, they feel like outcasts. Snarl in that Beast hunters comic even said that while they can transform into their robot forms like everyone else, if you look at them compared to everything around them, they are just hiding their true selves. Their "Dinobot" forms.

It's a real interesting adaptation to the character. He's an Autobot who wants to do right. Even if his decisions are arrogant and reckless. He and his team are the Autobot outcasts who felt rejected because of their new changes. I really wished we got to see Grimlock in TF Prime animation. The Dinobots would have made a great addition to the hunt for finding Shockwave as well as the Autobots being leaderless. Seeing him fight a Predacon in animation would have been such a epic moment for Transformers and non-Transformers fans.

As a fan of the Bayverse they really did the dinobots dirty in TLK, i wished they did more with them and have them learning to speak, heck i would like to even see Nemesis vs Grimlock, where they duck it out and both end up badly damaged.
4:04 I can totally relate to FOC Grimlock when it comes to speaking, It's like i know what to say, but when i talk i either stumble on my words or i pause for a moment to come up what else to say, i never noticed it until i got older and it's annoying.

Grimlock is my favorite character in... well anything. My reasoning for this is because of not only his status as a fire-breathing Tyrannosaurus barbarian, but because of his characterization. Grimlock really feels like a character that has untapped potential. If I were to make my own OFFICIAL take on the King, I would try to make him like a mix of IDW '05 and Fall of Cybertron. He was originally a Kaonial gladiator who moved to Iacon in order to join the Elite Guard. And then when the war broke out, Grimlock elevated from being a lowly Autobot shocktrooper to Wrecker to leading a team of his own. However, he of course has the classic Grimlock rage issue. And unlike Fall of Cybertron, he was born with a speech impediment instead of having a damaged brain. Which leads into a mission that leads them into Shockwave's claws. He and his team become the Dinobots, with Grimlock actually mauling Shockwave, giving him his iconic lack of a left arm and mono-optic. But I do feel like at one point, Grimlock would evolve, pardon the paleontology pun, to let go of his contempt for Optimus. And after Optimus joins the AllSpark, Grimlock would actually be granted leadership. Unlike the original Marvel comic, Grimlock has learned how to be a good leader, being more of a patient knight. But hey. That's just my two cents.

My favorite version is probably either IDW or Fall of Cybertron I think they both did the character very well

I always assumed that for the 20 years between G1's cartoon and the Movie, Grimlock and the other Dinobots had an entire life that's their own. Any change in the characterization may have been perfectly acceptable. Like Being more personable and funny, could be growing up with Spike and then Spike's kid Daniel, leaving him with more interaction with kids and being a friendlier person.

I actually do like the idea that Grimlock becomes a tyrannical leader of the autobots that takes things too far. It lives up to his alt form's namesake.

Question about the Marvel comics iteration tho; did he ever realize that he took things too far during his time as leader?

I love the idea of Grimlock and Slag meeting in the brig, brings to mind Wolverine and Sabretooth.

For me my favourite versions of grimlock are
1. Cyberverse (as u mentioned his bruce banner like persona in robot mode and crazy barbaric in dino mode.)
2. IDW (coz of the journey he goes through to control his rage )
3. FOC (as a guy who opposed optimus's ideology and thought him to be weak).

G1 would have been on this list of it weren't for the 86 movie and S3. I wish he ate and consumed wheelie that annoying little autobot death would been so much satisfying. Seriously I am still sad😢 that they killed my favourite S1 characters in the first scene (RIP ironhide, ratchet, prowl and brawn), i loved a lot.
