Japan has some very unique animals that aren’t found anywhere else in the world, so the entire world takes notice when videos and photos of these special animals are being circulated. One such animal is the tanuki, or raccoon dog, which lives exclusively in Japan and, strangely enough, isn’t related to a raccoon at all.

These are also called raccoon dogs. In China they are skinned alive for the fur. Yes, literally, alive. They don’t try to kill it first, they hang them from a foot, cut around the ankle, and pull the skin off. The poor things are still moving around afterward, in unspeakable pain I’m sure. It’s terrible.

Despite their name raccoon dogs are not actually raccoons nor are they related to them, but they are dogs after all, there are two different species of raccoon dog, Nyctereutes Procyonoides (Chinese Raccoon Dog) and Nyctereutes Viverrinus (Japanese Raccoon Dog), interestingly, the closest living relative of the raccoon dogs is the Bat-Eared Fox (Otocyon Megalotis), which is found in Africa, raccoon dogs have predators such as other dogs like grey wolves, golden jackals, and dholes, other predators include bears, wolverines, martens, cats, hyenas, and large civets.
