The Hidden World Of The Tessellated Darter

Stunning footage of a male Tessellated Darter in the wild as it protects its eggs from a Fathead Minnow as well as other male Tessellated Darters.
With lots of information about how these fish breed and care for their eggs. There's also interesting information about the fathead minnow.
I also mention other beautiful darter species such as the Rainbow Darter, the Tangerine darter, and the Bluemask Darter.

I love watching the little man turn upside down and then right side up again! Lovely fish, I always enjoyed watching them at the lake as a kid.

What stunning little fish! There are no native species of darter here in the UK, sadly, so its a privilege to see them here and learn about them in such a well presented manner. Thanks Dave!

What a great video and amazing footage! I’ve got a 45g unheated tank that has several fish varieties in it, including a Johnny darter that my 8 year old grandson netted and brought me one weekend when he came to visit. I guess I got lucky with it, because it readily took to flake food. I love watching it scurry around the bottom.

This was fantastic! The footage is quite amazing. I recently purchased a male and a female Rainbow Darters and my goodness are they enjoyable to watch scoot around the tank! Believe it or not, I have seen mine eat some Dr. Bassleer foods that I drop in the tank for the Pygmy Corydoras. They of course prefer black worms, grindle worms, live brine shrimp and any frozen foods 😊

This is fascinating, and as always filled with information and exquisite filming. I’m sorry I have been absent for some months, but everything hit me at once, and I had to completely change my life patterns, and allow myself to grieve. I have missed your wonderful presentations, and will be catching up on those I missed. Yours is the first I have visited since dropping out for awhile, and you did not let me down…not that you ever have.✨🖤🇨🇦

Honestly, its wild how much better these fish look underwater. A lot of the photos of them online are right being scooped up in a net, so they're super stressed, especially if they're being photographed out of the water.
Their colors and patterns show up so much better when they're healthy and thriving.

I do love native fish, people sleep on them, and not all need super cold water, unless you want to breed them.

Amazing video showing moments in life of those little, cute fish. This particular rock seems to be desired residence with panoramic view 😄. When watching this I feel like I'm pipping through keyhole to their home. Thanks for sharing with us this beautiful underworld.

I recently discovered a similar fisheries artist to Valerie Kells, Diane Peebles. In fact, I got a brochure about fish of the Chesapeake Bay which was illustrated by her!
