In Norway, if you rent out less than half of the space in your primary home, the money you earn from renting is not taxed. Many people take advantage of this by creating small apartments in their basements. This rental income helps them pay off their mortgage gradually, which is what Espen was talking about.

I’m starting to appreciate more and more the minimal approach - its amazing how warm the home even without much furniture. Makes me realise how cluttered & over-filled with meaningless stuff most people’s houses are. Makes me want to do a big spring clean!

Espen is clearly so thoughtful and shows great respect for the history of his home. I love how they even painted the kitchen with the type of paint they used back in the early 1900s.

The exterior of the home is enchanting. Even though the interior design is extremely simple, I was hit that the lack of art very much makes one’s eyes roam to the beautiful and intricate trim work throughout the home. The only off-putting area was the dining room. The table and chairs looked way too much like an office conference room for my comfort. Finally, I wish the home could have been showcased last or this December. The beautiful Norwegian snowfall made me wax nostalgic for the holidays!
