Did we order more Thai or Lao dishes? 🔍

I’m part Thai but grew up in the north eastern part of Thailand (close to Laos) so most of the foods are Thai/Lao combined. Sticky rice isn’t just solely Lao. It’s a big part of Thai cuisine as well. The foods are very similar with differing variations here and there. Examples: there’s a Thai and Lao version of papaya salad and larb. I will have to try this restaurant!

You did a great job with the quick summary 🙏 I’m a chef that specializes in Lao food and it’s a passion of mine so thank you so much for helping spread the Lao food love!

I once read that if you go to a Thai restaurant in the U.S., you might actually be eating Lao food. They name it a Thai restaurant because they think it would appeal to more (American) people since some (American) people don't know what Lao is.

Thai food is often served family style too tho. Maybe it’s different where you live but in Thailand we definitely eat it like that

I don’t think those tips are that helpful because they eat curry in Laos too and Thais usually eat family style unless you’re eating something like noodles. But for Thai food they’ll use holy basil or Thai basil and for lao food they’ll use lemon basil. Lao food tends to be even spicier. They do eat sticky rice in Thailand but mostly with street food so you can eat on the go, versus in Laos it’s more of a staple even at home.

Hi Jeanell i just want to say..thank you for giving Laos some recognition being that you are from a Flipino decent. I know Laos is not talked about or even known about compared to the other Asians countries. We are a lonely country and nobody seems to recognize Laos . Thank you for all you do to help your Lao friend Saeng Douangdara. Your channel is popular so everyone will see Laos. Finally. Bless your heart. Thank you.

I will disappoint my parents if I get this wrong considering I am Lao. LMAO.

As a Lao person im like 99 percent sure the last three dishes are all Lao! My mom makes the noodle soup but with rice a lot, and we always help with making the rice balls for the Nam Khao :D

According to me as a Thai growing up in Thailand.
- Coconut milk based dish is more common in Thai cuisine.
- Chinese (Cantonese/Hokkien/Teochew) influence is more obvious in Thai cuisine, especially in Bangkok.
- Laotians consume more sticky rice. Thais consume more white rice/jasmine rice.
Another fact to consider is that there are millions of Thai citizens who are ethnically Lao. Some even say that there are more Lao people living in Thailand than Lao people living in Laos. So what should be the definition of Thai or Lao cuisine?

A lot of popular Thai dishes are not even Thai. Most are from Laos, some are from Vietnam and China

Eating Thai food for a long time now and having Lao food more recently in the last two years, I can see which dishes you shared are served according to my restaurant dining experiences. I enjoy both cuisines!

Both are my favorite. Lao food felt like graduate level food though once you start eating Padek or however you pronounce the super fish sauce

Can you try Baklava? It originated in Turkey, then it was modified in Greece. Each country has their own versions if it.

I know this topic is sensitive to some but most of those dishs are 100% Lao. Here is where a lot of people get confused with food origin and food from a country. Many foods thought to be Thai are actually Lao especially in the U.S. where many Thai restaurants are owned by Lao people. Just because a food is made and eaten in another country does not mean it is originally from that country. For example Americans love tacos and sushi but just because we can make it and eat it here in the states for years does not mean they are originally American. Just like how a lot of Lao food is and eaten and made by other people and other countries does not mean its from there. It gets confusing when a Lao person who lived in other countries for generations makes Lao food can believe it to be another cuisine. Long story short sushi is popular in the U.S. made and eaten by many different ethnicities for years but is not American food origin. Lao food made and eaten in other countries is still lao food. Laap, nam khao, sticky rice = Lao

A lot of the Thai food you’re eating especially noodle dishes and deep fried food are actually Chinese food (Teochew, Hokkien, Hakka) dishes that are given thai names. Like Yen Ta Fo, Bak kut te, kuay tiew, kuay jub, rad na, pad see ew, khao mun gai, etc. There are different versions of these dishes in other SE Asian countries due to the Teochew/Hokkien diaspora in the region
