The body doubling tid bit at the end is so interesting! We homeschool and my son always wants me right next to him when he works. It's like it helps him work. I never understood it.

YES!! I feel so at a loss because I am blown away - just BLOWN AWAY that these Chromebooks they hand out to kids can access SO MUCH, not even just distractions, but also inappropriate content (which is a lure for any kid, but especially ADHDers). I really REALLY wish that school districts would address this issue, and make it possible to shut off any software / websites via some sort of parental/instructor control options.

Great recommendations Ryan. I kept thinking I or my son needed to fix this, but you are absolutely spot on with your assessment. Like others have commented, it baffles me that educators across the country believe Chromebooks are a better teaching tool than pen, paper, class movies, etc.. My observation of my son, but also hearing stories about what his classmates are doing in school ... is that any advantages of the Chromebook are eclipsed by the distraction factor. We parents need to insist the schools either lock them down or abandon the Chromebook.

While we’ve not had this issue we have had issues with getting consistent emails from administrators about my child’s outburst in frustration which while I agree needs corrected they expectations they are setting for a 1st grade based on how they process this is crazy

Thank you for this video. This has been our struggle. Still working on it.

This exact thing happened this week. My son was written up at school for playing games on the Chromebook. I already have the school keep the Chromebook in school at night. When he had a video presentation that he had to work on at home, I caught him looking at non-school related videos on thed Chromebook. I wrote the school dean and asked for the non-academic sites be blocked. The school dean said IT could not do that because the teachers needed the students to access the internet for some schoolwork.I asked that alternative methods of presentations be allowed. I will now ask that the write-up be quashed.

Love all your content Ryan. Does anyone else think that Ryan's voice sounds like Joe rogan?

When my kid was in school the big problem we were having wasn’t so much her switching to YouTube during class, but the other students in front of or to the side of her watching YouTube or gaming. It made it impossible for her to focus on the lesson or work if she could see other kids screens. She went from being a straight A student when they didn’t have laptops to a C-D student when they introduced them. Private school so no special Ed department, and they got rid of books/textbooks to afford the laptops. Most assignments were computer/website based. And teachers would use YouTube or video game time as a reward for those getting their work done early. Whenever they went remote because of spiking Covid cases she was getting A’s again. We are now in a homeschool hybrid where she gets in-person classes 2 days a week (as well as clubs and extracurriculars on the other days) and she’s back up to straight-A’s again.

It’s in our 504 that our son does not bring the laptop home. They want them bringing it home daily but it’s the only device we couldn’t password protect and we kept finding him sneaking off to watch it so I shut it down. If he needs it for school, fine, but I stood firm on refusing to allow it at home any longer.

Any suggestions for classes that need to use computers? Teaching coding, photoshop, video editing, etc. In this case books and papers are not sufficient to teach the class.

Body doubling definitely helps my daughter, but any suggestion for when it’s not an option? I need to make dinner, drop sister off somewhere, etc. I recently signed up for your courses; I assume it’s in there somewhere so you can also point to the module.
