Quite interesting (and often forgotten) is that Fiat also made a 5-cylinder diesel that featured in a number of Alfa Romeos from the mid-2000s. In my opinion, nothing beats a five pot diesel, and I love mine in my D3 C30.

My 2014 XC60 D5 is probably the best all round car I’ver owned. Good economy, plenty of power, superb comfort and convenience and handles very well for an SUV - delighted! Would love to drop one in my old 240 😎

We have a 2011 XC90 D5 with the 200 bhp version of the engine. Coming up on 180, 000 miles and we still tow 1.5 tonnes with it several times a month. Doesn’t use oil or coolant, and the torque is brilliant. MOT smoke emissions below measurable levels for the past 2 tests. And very easy and logical to work on. Proper bit of engineering!

I'v owned around 20 cars in my life. Some quite expensive and new some old and all in between.

Got fed up with all the problems with new hybrid cars so I bought my 2010 year D5 V70, driven 450K km with 4000 euros couple of months ago. So far been more reliable than new cars i'v had.

Last December I bought a 2006 P2 V70 D5 163 HP Kinetic (basic finishing) manual gear box with 300 000 km, now 311 000. Very good condition overall considering an 18 years old car, no rust, no oil split, everything working under the hood and inside the car... I serviced the timing belt + oil change, the engine runs smoothly and economically for such a big station wagon - 6.6 l/100 km - love the sound, love the torque, love the simplicity of the controls for all radio and AC with hard buttons, rotators and levers ( and not these shitty touch-screen interfaces of modern cars ) love the general comfort of that car, especially while my son was driving and myself in the passenger seat, as it is of course less aged than the driver's one. Seeing what others are saying and demonstrating with their owns, I'm confident I can drive this car for many years to come. A wise buying decision for a wise car.

Here is 2010 XC60 2.4 D5 205hp biturbo with Aisin transmission and Haldex Gen4. Engine is so good, with a lot of power and torque and a lot of tuning potential but Aisin transmission limited torque on 450Nm. That's enough but that engine is real monster. Mine doesn't have swirl flaps, but manifold gasket is weak point, I already changed one. Change original A5B5 oil every 10-12k km, clean EGR and MAF/MAP sensors and very important thing is to clean area between AC and coolant radiators... The dust between them can cause a serious problems to engine because a plenty P3 models doesn't have preinstalled coolant temperature indicator...

The old VW 2.5 TDI was also used in the early Volvo V70's. A marvelous engine as well.

I had a Volvo S60 163bhp few years ago. Now I have an Alfa Romeo 159 2.4 jtdm. People don't believe me when I say to them how the two cars are similar. The only thing I miss about the Volvo is the seats. They are the best.

Maintenance, that's the key. Change the oil regularly and the thing will look after itself . Find its faults and be aware of when they can fail. I had my auxiliary belt and timingbelt changed with new tensioners and pulleys, everyone of the pulleys were like new but piece of mind for the future, clutch is next, £1000 job but hey ho.

I've had a S70 with the 5 cyl Audi/VW TDI Audi used in their 2.5 A6 diesels back in the days and then I had a 2004 V70 D5 and both where amazing engines.

Love my euro 3 d5 v70 manual. Done everything possible to the car its 2003 with 112k miles just keeps going. I'm like you I change my oil very often. I've got a map on mine. The best thing I've done it's only little is change all intercooler/ turbo hoses cause after a map they where collapsing bad. Oh and new engine mounts + blanked the egr and cleaned the inlet manifold

Audi were the pioneer's of this engine the volvo 850 adopted the 5 cylinder tdi engine from the tdi 140 audi a6 it was identical other than in the transverse configuration. And volvo just ran and ran with this engine and later versions of it. Great engine if looked after. Nowhere near as economical as the early 850 models but still not bad. In my old 850 me and a friend set the cruise control to around 60ish from cornwall to Bristol and we pulled 68mpg on a run.

I've got a D5 in my XC70. Not the most economical engine but it's totally reliable. Accelerate hard and it's music to my ears. By the way, there is a marine version of the D5 - just a bit of useless information.
