I worked for a Budget Rent a Truck place, and my boss required all customers to return the truck with a full tank of gas. Of course people would fill it up before returning it, but by the time they drove the truck from the gas station where they filled the tank to the dealership, they used a little bit of the gas they put in. My boss always would charge them a 20 dollar service fee for that. He was a SHMUCK. Don't worry though, he went out of business a long time ago.

Scotty is right about taking pictures. Years ago we booked a rental car from one of the big "enterprises". They were short of cars and had to wait 45 minutes, the guy pulled the minivan nose first against the building; the car wasn't washed, vacuumed or with a full tank of gas. The vehicle was just basically turned in by the last person who rented the car and not prepped. It was freezing cold and we were headed down to Florida. At the first rest stop I noticed the front end was damaged; I said to myself I am going to get screwed for this. I purchased rental insurance from a company Allianz when I did the booking online for the car at the same time. Sure enough when I got back they said the damage was my fault; I demanded to see video footage of the car entering and leaving the premises. I fought it as a matter of principal but Allianz took care of the whole thing. Always book online it's much cheaper. I always like Scottys advice but I would be very careful if you think your credit card company is covering the vehicle; get it in writing.

Rented a Uhaul like that once. About halfway into my trip (across town) it started belching thick black smoke from the tailpipe and the idle was going all over the place. By the time I made it back to Uhaul it was spraying oil out the exhaust and the clerk looks at me and says "was that scratch on the cab before?" as the mid 80's van sat in a pool of oil and smoke. Idk I can't see the van anymore lol

Rented car keys: while on honeymoon in Disney World I had my rental car key in my top shirt pocket. We went on a ride and over the first bump I felt that sucker lift and go flying. It was a $250 replacement fee (back in 2008) and my reflexes kicked it. Left hand went swiping for it and I caught it at full stretch outside of the cart to my left. The guy behind me was impressed... my wife missed it. Bought a belt clip and kept it there from then on.

Also take pictures when you return the car.

I did the same exact thing Scotty! Enterprise wanted $500 at the airport so I googled the nearest enterprise not in the airport and took a Lyft there. Instead of $500, they charged $300, along with a $18 Lyft ride

I've gotten in the habit of taking a video as I approach my rental car and do a walk around making comments on any flaws I see as I do so. As I go around the car I raise and lower my camera (phone) to get different angles in order to catch any flaws and end the video turning my key in the ignition to indicate the mileage on the vehicle.

This procedure might sound anal, but it's very quick to do.

My mom had pos cars her whole life. Told her to get a camry or accord. Her only concern was the number on the ODO, and the number on the sticker, despite what anyone told her. So instead of a 2010 toyota with 75, 000 miles, she got a 13 impala with 50, 000 miles. She said i'm the first owner! can you believe it!, im like how its a 13!!! she said it was a RENTAL ! isn't that awesome!! I'm like SERIOUSLY!? I' done helping people. immediately it had problems like we predicted, with less interior room than my civic! Same w my sister. she had a car w engine problems years ago. 3.1 cavalier convertible. told her buy a rav4 or CRV, whats she do? buys a malibu. same damn 3.1 engine., then again and again & again. she must of bought EVERY GM car with the SAME engine. STIll not learned!! she just bought an impala w a 3.5. SMH I'm so done w giving advise.

How about making a video on buying a former rental car?

You are one wicked smaht guy Scotty! I just got back from vacation in Maine...and "considered" a rental out of Logan. They wanted $1200/week for a full size sedan. But at the local place in Saugus (10 miles north of Logan), I could rent the SAME car from the SAME company for $350/week. I could also return it TO THE AIRPORT with that price. I didn't take that deal since some family came up to Maine for the 2 weeks, but the third week...I rented that same car at Logan, for $274 (incl all those taxes/fees).

Always check the local operations around the airports, but also make sure they are OPEN when you fly in/out, cause they aren't 24x7 operations out in the suburbs.

I think it's not enough to take the "before" picture. Get someone from the car rental to acknowledge damage before you leave the lot. That said, I got the insurance when in Las Vegas as I used valet quite often, and there were at least two dents by those mofos. Returned the car no hassle. I noticed driving rental cars is more fun with the insurance.

I work for Hertz. We use iPhones with special software to do vehicle inspections. Full 360 degree view of the car and then we do a full walk around and zoom in to take pictures of dents, scratches, or scuffs. All pictures are approved by the customer and then they can chose to have it emailed to them.
