Directed by the absolute legend, John Carpenter, The Thing was released back in 1982, and is a science fiction horror based on the 1938 novella Who Goes There, written by John W. Campbell Jr. The Thing tells the story of a group of American researchers in Antarctica who encounter the eponymous “Thing”, a parasitic extraterrestrial life-form that assimilates then imitates other organisms. In turn, the group is overcome with paranoia and conflict as they learn that they can no longer trust each other, and that any one of them could in fact be “The Thing”.

When I first saw this movie on HBO back in the 80s, I was amazed. Where has this movie been and how was it possible that I missed it? It's been a movie I will return to again and again as it has great replay value.

An absolute horror/sci-fi classic. Brilliant in every way, shape & form. To this day & beyond....the greatest practical SFX ever!! Story, acting & direction is top notch. In other words.... A masterpiece!!

JC's The Thing has been consistently in my top 5 horror movies of all time list pretty much since it's release... I think if maybe it was released at a slightly different time it would have done better, but that is the past. I am just glad that finally people hold it in the high esteem that it deserves. It's a damned masterpiece, bow your heads!

Carpenter is a genius, and The Thing is in my top ten favorite movies. I am not trying to be "that" person, but Carpenter is still alive though. I think he even addressed rumors of his "death" a few months ago. I love The Shining, but there are so many videos on it already. Could you do one on The Hunger, The Howling, or The Fog?
