What you saw was almost certainly a parhelion. Or as it's most commonly referred to, a “sun dog” (or occasionally “mock sun”). Sometimes it makes it seem like there are two Suns, but it can also make it appear that there are three (depending on the angle). It's caused by clouds containing ice crystals that are in very specific locations on either side of the Sun relative to the observer. It is most common when the Sun is near the horizon, and can happen during any season. Famously, during the Battle of Mortimer’s Cross (a well-known major battle of Britain’s Wars of the Roses) a parhelion was plainly observed and caused the illusion of three Suns. This obviously disturbed most everyone, on both sides. Edward IV pulled off a fantastic morale boosting feat by telling his troops that the three Suns represented the three sons of York (he and his brothers), and their victory was thus pre-determined and guaranteed by God. This worked, and Edward IV and his men won a decisive victory against their foes.
