In my school in Britain we were taught that the first use of tanks was the Battle of Cambrai, however I think that it might be referencing the first time of tanks used in mass, either way I’m not too sure.

The Austrian proto-tank shown here was in fact the first armored combat vehicle ever. However, the inventor made a grave mistake at the first demonstration, during a practice maneuver: he scared Archduke Franz Ferdinand's horse with it. The Archduke got irate, and ordered "that stupid contraption" to be removed from the maneuver field, and forbade the army to even think of ever having one.

The British Mark I was the first ever tank to see combat.
Mark I tanks went into action for the first time on 15 September 1916 on the Somme.

Thanks again for an interesting short fact. There’s been an ongoing debate on whether the British were premature in revealing their innovation with only 49 tanks available and no thought of exploiting any breakthrough- if they gene conceived that tanks could accomplish that. Whereas at Cambrai in 1917 they used 476 tanks with devastating result but again couldn’t exploit their success. Do you think they should have waited at the Somme until they had a larger number of tanks?

Well yes most would say that the first traditional tank was used during WW1 but tanks have been around for thousands of years. For example, the Romans use a "tank" strategy by forming a sheild wall. Leonardo DaVinci had a conscept of the DaVinci tank that would spin and fire the many cannons on it.

Why are Tanks called Tanks?

The most popular story is that when they were shipped to France in WWI, the shipping manifest for Security Reasons described them as “Rainwater Tanks”.

But honestly who ever heard of a 30 Ton “Rainwater Tank”?

Even Railway Workers and Dock Workers aren’t that stupid.

T.A.N.K. is a Military Acronym meaning “Truck, Armoured, New Kind”, which was of course a much more accurate description and helps explain the 30 Ton weight.
