Nearly two years after the National Medical Commission Act was passed, the Commission has released draft guidelines for medical colleges in the public domain, seeking feedback from people and various stakeholders. Over 25 guidelines have been listed on fixing fees in private and deemed medical colleges across the country. Once these norms are passed, fees for 50% MBBS and postgraduate medical seats in these colleges will be regulated. It will also bring relief to those students who cannot pursue medical education due to limited seats in government institutes and exorbitant fees in the private ones. The guidelines also clearly say no to the capitation fee, adding that the principle of education being “not-for-profit” are being strictly adhered to.The Commission hopes these draft regulations are implemented before the next academic session begins. On this edition of The Big picture, we will analyse the draft guidelines released by the National Medical Commission and what changes will they bring about in medical education in the country

Very good topic ma'am, So much disparity in medical college fees even among the government colleges of the difference state or even in the same state..

Quality of education is almost same in most of the government institutions..fees should be kept same...for easy acces of medical education ... specially for middle class...

No matter how many such debates occur, no one can solve the issue of expensive and exotic High Class Education in our country which is only for the few privileged. today it is nothing more than a business. the roles which schools must adhere to like providing best education, career counselling to students and guiding them through applications to various institutes so that the young sensitive children do not feel lost while making future defining choices, all such tasks have been commercialized outside the school premises by institutes and tuition centers who even leech off more money than schools.
A country where quality education is deep rooted in its culture and history, where vishwa gurus and scholars like Vishnugupta, Varahmihira, Shankaracharya, Aryabhatta, and many more were born, a country where education was never a privilege but a right, in such a country today thousands of children commit suicide as their families cant afford exorbitant fees of schools or colleges. ( there were times when i decided to do that too)
Yet the system is still sleeping and will always sleep unless they finally acknowledge that there are other ways to make money and develop than commercializing education.

And then these people ask why we have lowest rate of doctors per million population.

The quality of training of Post graduate students has become pathetic. The seats have increased drastically without taking into account as to how the residents will be trained. This is will have a worse effect in coming years when these insufficiently trained residents become consultants. Also decreasing the fees of residency will make hospitals/medical colleges pass on the burden to the patients, the patients will be highly charged and this will further decrease the number of patients in private hospitals, which in turn will effect the training of residents because the number of patients will be less. We are just moving from one crisis to another.

There's total disregard to black money transactions of rich and medical colleges. Finance departments should join hands to control this. The accounts of management quota/NRI quota student parents must be examined by an independent auditor appointed by government. Without strict supervision structures like SEBI / RBI, NMC will become another toothless tiger.
