Ironically, 2015 was the last year I ever used a fax machine.

Ford once said, if I had asked the people, they would have wanted carts with faster horses.

It happened with TVs. I mean nobody has two televisions (1955)...

I guess that's why they went to the past at BttF 3, they run out of fax machines

A lot of people don't know that fax machines are still widely used it's just not something people use for personal reasons anymore. Many kinds of business and most Universities still utilize fax machines

That scene was a complaint I had about the movie….. 1989 I was 12 that year and my brother had a fax machine and it was a pain in the ass to run. When I saw the movie I said God I hope the fax machine has been replaced by something digital in 25 years from now.

I'll always remember the person that wondered if the people in 1960 celebrated the day Marty went back in time to, then didn't understand how they'd have no idea about the movie that hadn't come out yet and argued it was a perfectly logical thing to wonder about.

Okay so this is basically saying future predictions are limited to the current available technology of the time, I’m curious how the people from the past like early 1900’s late 1800’s was imagining technology that in my opinion seemed to surpass their available technology by quite a bit

It’s really cool that we can look at cinema for how people used to think.

That might be a nod to when in the first one, when he went to 1955 everyone said “no one had more than one television.”😊

The way we imagine the future often incorporates two components:
1) elements of the wildest human dreams such as flying and teleportation, telekinesis, etc;
2) the most advanced pieces of technology of the present day.
We see number two in Back to the future where the screen writers imagined that 2015 would be a time where the most advanced tech of 1985 (or so they thought) -the fax machine- would be widespread. We also see that when some scientists imagine that humans in hundreds of years would evolve to have a slouched back and
deformed fingers from using smartphones. In both cases there is no understanding that such technology could become obsolete and be replaced by other technology.
