WoW Player Housing, How I'd Make It Work (And It'd Be Awesome)

As the self-proclaimed champion of player housing, I finally took the time to flesh out my vision of how it'd work in the World of Warcraft, from the initial design to how items would be placed, the content rollout and even premium features!

Sounds like Soul watched the system in SWTOR and then was like "This is a great IDEA for player Housing" :D Keep it up Soul we need this in game.

I love the idea of player housing. I've been playing this game since soon after launch and always stare longingly at the gated portal in Stormwind between Trade District and Old Town. When the garrison system came out I felt it was a good start but was disappointed at Blizzard not folding it into future expansions. I know you say this isn't the garrison system that you're describing, but there are many things from the garrison that players loved and that would age well. I looked forward to logging on and seeing some of my pets roaming around, the archaeology display room, the fishing pond, herb plots, etc. The holiday vendor was always a nice surprise with her choice of garrison decorations. Most of all, I miss the Jukebox. I spent so much time collecting the scrolls and was so upset that I couldn't take the jukebox with me. If you haven't seen it yet, check out LunoLarks "Wishful Thoughts" video that partially covers player housing -- he brings up many of the same good points. This is all to say, keep up the push for this. Many of the systems are already in the game in some form or other (think of a wardrobe or closet being like our transmog tab--no mount needed). I'm sure Blizzard can find a way to monetize it so that it's worth doing. I don't play FFXIV but was shocked at how much they must be making on player housing doodads. I personally get more attached to items that I've collected or made so the idea of creating an entire new market of crafted items for housing sounds wonderful. Can't wait to hear more of your thoughts on this.

The funny thing with housing is, it was never on my agenda when I still played WoW - I didnt even really know what people meant by it till I saw what it could be in FF14. If WoW would do something like that, with all the stuff that comes with it (crafting being relevant again, more gathering, reviving old zones, creativity in the community other than how to tweek this build to win in arena) it would give people another reason to logg in other than a daily grind.

I don't see a housing to be fitting wow, BUT... if it were to be implemented, I think it could be a good idea to have a guild hall (something like in neverwinter) AND a small village in guild hall where every guildmate could either rent a house or buy it, and only your guildmates could visit your house. That I think it could fit somehow wow, but this will require A LOT of work from devs, to implement it and to maintain it.

If you haven't already, check out Elder Scrolls Online's housing and store system. I like it WAY better than FF14's personally and I've been enjoying playing with that for a few years now. To my knowledge, you can't lose things either from inactivity (at least I haven't).

A boost to crafting to make that relative again. A reason to use the entire world. Something you will always have and not just abandon with the next expansion. It would be a win! WoW really needs this.

I entirely agree with you, and I'm glad you're opening up the discussion again! Having chill things to work towards would do wonders for those more casual, and help the rp a ton. Keep plugging it, and we'll be your cheerleaders!

Originally, I didn't give two figs about player housing. However, after enjoying Animal Crossing way more than I was expecting to and the thought of professions actually making somthing that would last longer than an expansion (let alone more than a patch cycle) I'm down to clown. Don't give up on the dream! Keep choppin that tree!

Love these ideas. Also love the idea once you've completed all quests in a zone and relevant rep, you unlock a house in the area. Complete all stranglethorn vale quests, get to live in booty bay shanty town!

I would dig player housing. I love the world in WOW so why not have some fun side project to work on? Also, I don't understand how people can complain about Blizz Shop for Mounts but than completely gloss over the fact FF14 literally sells EVERYTHING

It needs to have massive customization and let you create it nearly any where in the world. I always thought the idea of creating my own kara like Medivh created for myself.

Neverwinter had a dungeon creating thing in their player housing thing and I know this is less realistic but I'd love something like this for a personal training ground / neat meta thing for the community to do to challenge each other.

I like the idea of crafting furniture, and also of unique promotional items and drops, but I think that is still quite limiting in terms of expression. We literally play travelling adventurers. I would love to be able to collect items (art assets that already exist in the game) that reflect that, e.g. tauren woven mats from Thunder Bluff, a kodo skin carpet from Orgrimmar, a shelf of pretty bottles from Kul Tiras, etc. Some random rocks and sticks and fencing, etc, would also be very useful. ESO really excels in this regard, as well as in the free placement of items. Basically, I would LOVE to transfer that whole system to WoW which I much prefer playing in general. It's one of my very favourite pipe dreams. 😄

Star Wars:ToR has a lot of similarities with WoW (of old) yet we’ve had player housing over there for ages.

Everquest runs on a hugely outdated engine but they’ve had player housing (and guild halls) for like a decade.

Even Star Trek online has fleet holdings and starship interiors. They’re a bit cookie cutter but at least it’s something.

I have mostly given up on Player housing, Blizzard doesn't seem to know wtf to do with it despite almost all other MMO's having it (and for good reason). They seem to want people to play the game but they don't want to give people their own place to decorate, not even guild halls with rooms to deck out.

Lord of the Rings online has a robust housing system, it's one of the things I miss the most from that game. Decorations can be acquired in a number of ways, through crafting, dungeons, and even by bringing special corpses to a taxidermist. New themed decorations are added every year to the festivals, encouraging repeat play of old festivals. I would love it if Wow copied some of those ideas!
