Congestive Heart Failure Made EASY

Congestive heart failure (CHF) occurs when the heart is unable to pump blood efficiently, leading to a buildup of fluid in the body.

Left-sided heart failure typically results in pulmonary congestion, causing hallmark signs and symptoms such as dyspnea, crackles in the lungs, orthopnea, and pink frothy sputum.

Right-sided heart failure, on the other hand, leads to systemic fluid buildup, resulting in symptoms like peripheral edema, jugular vein distention (JVD), and ascites.

EMTs and Paramedics manage CHF with CPAP to improve oxygenation and reduce fluid buildup in the lungs, and nitroglycerin (Nitro) to reduce cardiac workload by dilating blood vessels.
