Luminar AI is finally here. Over the past several weeks, I’ve shared a variety of videos showing Luminar AI’s editing capabilities - and they are excellent. However, Luminar AI is a different animal than Luminar 4. It’s not an upgrade, it’s not a version bump. And there are ramifications to that.

In this video, I share 5 things I think you need to know about Luminar AI.

1. Keep Luminar 4 Installed When You Install Luminar AI
Why? So your Luminar 4 Looks are migrated into Luminar AI.

2. Templates Speed Up Your Workflow
Templates are great to jumpstart your workflow and leverage AI.

3. Layers Are Gone
There is no more layers support in Luminar AI, either Adjustment Layers or Image Layers. Local Masking offers alternatives for localized adjustments and texture blending.

4. Lots Of Tools Have Moved, Some Are Gone
Luminar AI shuffled a lot of editing tools around. What you’re looking for is probably still there, with a few tools that are no longer. I’ve got a detailed “Rosetta Stone” video to show you all the changes.

5. Luminar AI Is Not Your DAM Asset Manager
Luminar AI is not the place to manage large sets of photos for the long term. Asset management features are slightly less than Luminar 4. Star ratings and color labels are gone. You’ve got folders and picks - that’s it. Skylum themselves will tell you … the Catalog is more of a convenience to browse photos, then get on to editing.

A few minutes ago, I finished viewing your video about the five things you need to know about Luminar AI. I love your style, your slow soft way of speaking and explaining. I have subscribed to your YouTube videos and intend to study each one day by day. I downloaded and installed both platforms; Luminar 4 and Luminar AI. So far I've been working with Affinity Photo, DxO The Nik Collection, and Luminar 4/AI. I'm very happy with how my pictures have been enhanced using these post-processing applications. Thank you for giving us your experiences using Luminar software. I really appreciate it. Regards.

I am really liking Luminar AI, as an LRc first and PS next photographer, Luminar AI is designed perfectly for my workflow. I like that they cut out the DAM features and are focusing on the one and the only purpose I use-photo processing. Thank you for the series of videos to help with the transition. LR+PS Smart Objects+ Luminar AI = a fast, powerful, and professional workflow. Plus limitless possibilities.

Hello Anthony ...I have just purchased Luminar Ai. Only to find out (Via Community blogs) that there was and is a problem with Luminar 4 and Ai, that of very slow speed. I have it installed on new and empty windows 10 with an intel core i7 processer It is very slow to load and slow to use There is nothing else on the pc at is running. So I am experiencing the same old and known fault when ist used on either PC OR Mac.. Then my question is how have you got it running so quickly ?

Thanks Scott. You forgot to note an important feature that is gone as well. It’s the luminosity mask. Let alone the advanced feature in the pro tab such as the optics advanced menu is blank in the windows version. I was right when I decided to give Skylum once last chance this year. Never again will I buy another Luminar.

Hi Scott, nice review. The new local adjustments of Luminar AI are amazing. interesting thing is that they can be use as global (like ON1 by memory) so can replace layers in some cases.
Where are located the non destructive changes if not in a catalog ?
I often wonder why i need a asset manager if i can create folders by dates with folder names, add rating, keywords, ... Photmechanic6 pro looks a very nice alternative to that for 229usd. I don't have it but looks so nice for texture browsing, ... with jpg previews of raw... !

Thus far I'm referring luminar 4 over luminar AI that's far it seems as though it's setup for beginners, but I've only used it a couple of days hoping my opinion will change

Hi Scott, I used to use Luminar 4 as a plugin to ON1 Photo Raw and watched your video on how to do it. I see that Luminar AI doesn't work....do you know if this is possible? Thanks for your great tutorials :-)

Great overview! Sooo... given the 5 things you mentioned and thinking about a novice to intermediate user, is there any real benefits to keeping L4 installed vs just using LAI?

Hi Scott, thank you for your information. What hardware do you think would work best with Luminar AI? Just from your personal experience, don't feel being responsible. Thanks.

Hi Scott, simple question, Do i still need Luminar 4 as for layer composing or for my photo Library?

I am running into all kinds of problems trying to apply a template to more than 1 image. For some reason it looks like you can't just select multiple images and then hit apply template. You need to apply it to 1 image then 'copy adjustments' of that image and paste them on to the images you want the template to be applied to. The issue is it's copying the colour temp and tint values with this and so totally changing the white balance of all the images.

So unless every single one of your photos are taken under identical lighting conditions then I don't see how you can mass apply templates/edits using this program but I am surely missing something aren't I because that is a very basic function.

I have tried manually setting the white balance to 'As Shot' before copying or syncing but it just ignores this and copies whatever colour temp and tint values that original photo had and applies them to every single photo in the whole collection.

To be clear, all I want to do is apply a template to a load of images. Any ideas? Thanks.

I now have L4 and LAi on my MAC. I have both applications using the same photo folders but I cannot seem to get both to use the same catalog. This sort of makes sense considering that they are different platforms but now if I open an image that was previously edited on L4, it is the original with no edits. Is there a way to have both use the same catalog?

I'm new to Luminar AI it's the only one I use. It freezes nearly every time I use it, it totally stops me doing anything on my Windows 10 pc. I have to turn it off and start again, it's like my pc can't handle the program

If I have Luminar AI (1 Seat) and I am thinking to upgrade my computer device. Can I still use the same product in my new computer or I have to purchase Luminar AI again?
THANKS

Luminar must be paying you guys are lot to promote this bunk SW. The worst thing about it is that after editing your picture when you export it, the processing time is approx 40 sec for each picture. Looking at pics in your catalogue is also slow and sluggish and none of these influencers will tell you that. I bought the AI for $84 and cannot reach anyone at this company for a refund. Search this is a browser "luminar AI is slow at exporting"
