Learn English Through Stories Level 3 🔥 | Graded reader | Improve Your English Listening | Ilets
"The Tell-Tale Heart" is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe, and first published in 1843. The story is narrated by an unnamed man, who is trying to convince the reader of his sanity, while he describes the murder of an old man with a "vulture-like" eye.
The narrator works as a caregiver for the old man, and is consumed by the desire to kill him, solely because of his eye. He plans the murder carefully, making sure to visit the old man's bedroom every night for a week, before finally carrying out the deed.
On the eighth night, he sneaks into the old man's bedroom, and suffocates him with a pillow. After the murder, the narrator dismembers the body, and hides it under the floorboards of the room. Despite his meticulous planning, the narrator is haunted by guilt, and believes he can hear the old man's heart beating, from beneath the floorboards.
The sound becomes louder and louder, until he finally confesses to the police, convinced that they can hear it too. The story ends with the narrator proclaiming his sanity, while insisting that, the beating of the old man's heart is driving him mad."
