Michell wrote the song while on a plane: "I put down the book I was reading, looked out the window, and saw the clouds from the plane window, and I immediately started writing this song".

The lyric reflects a life that we can relate to! —looking at clouds, love and life from both sides: "up and down" (clouds), "give and take" (love), and finally "win and lose" (life).
