Yes that makes sense. it’s just not mostly as advantageous and maybe too close to create a pop up but it might be needed at times I guess

It’s not against the rules to stand in the kitchen; it’s just a really bad idea. Now there’s the “out ball bait”: you get a really soft dink close to the net. You stay in the kitchen to get them to hit it at you. You anticipate the shot and move out of the way because the angle and strength send it out. It’s an old trick and no one falls for it anymore, but if my opponent is speeding up too often from the line, I know I can pull one off.

doesnt the ball have to bounce in the kitchen in order for you to be able to step into the kitchen to return it?

You can stand in the kitchen as much as you like at any time unless you’re serving as long as you don’t hit the ball out of the air while you’re in there or forward momentum brings you in after the volley.

Common cases when this is advantageous are when stepping in to return a short dink or when a lob is going to land in the kitchen you have lots of time to stand next to the net, wait for the bounce, and slam it while standing in the kitchen.
