GENERAL COMPARISON RESIDENTIAL CARE HOMES AND ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES
A residential care home is a small, generally less than 10 residents, care setting that is set in a personal, family-style, single family residential home. While bigger Assisted Living Facilities often use the phrase "home like" or Family-style more accurately they offer hotel style or assembly line care and services. When most people think of home they think of sitting around the kitchen table talking about day's event or everyone sitting in the Family room watching tv. In a small family style, single family home, that feeling can remain. In a big Assisted Living Facility with rows of rooms one can easily envision the caregiver going room to room in a more institutional, assembly line style of care.
We believe that the big, Assisted Living Facility, often times appeals to a hope that you will get younger and not continue to need more care when in fact that is just not true. They also appeal to the issue that no senior wants to move to any care setting and lose control over any part of their daily lives. In some ways the families appealing to that idea of hotel style living, social party going, and fun that helps convince the senior to move in. The danger of the false assumption is that you are likely to get less care now, age faster, and will be forced to move when life or aging progresses. In general, Assisted Living Facilities are set up to provide independent living and not heavy assisted living. They have 3 care givers per 100 assisted residents and 1 administrator to coordinate the medical and protective case management for all 100 + of these residents. In many cases, as the care needs increase, the price increases and forces people to move or the facility just says they can't provide that level of care. Before you move in ask to see current examples of those heavy care cases now when you are well to re assure yourself that they can provide that level of care and at what cost later or be prepared to move when you get more needy and are least able to deal with a new care setting and new care team.
