The rule of law in the GATT/WTO

To mark the 20th anniversary of the World Trade Organization, the WTO’s Legal Affairs Division prepared an exhibition to show the importance of the Rule of Law in the WTO. It displayed various documents dating back to the GATT times up to the present day showing different legal aspects of the Organization. In particular, it addressed two basic features of the Rule of Law: “law making” and “enforcement”. Some of the people involved in the preparation of this exhibit explain some of its highlights.

In 1947, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade ( GATT) was created, and the modern global trading system was born. In 1994, a new world trade agreement was reached. The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994 enhanced the role of International law in regulating trade and created the WTO.
