The stones of Stonehenge go from one upright stone to another taking up the entire top of the upright. Only in recreations does each horizontal stone laid across the top only go half way to accomodate the next stone forming a horizontal circular form. In its current existing state the horizontal stones take up the entire upper exposed surface of the standing stones leading me to believe in its original construction they resembled a group of archway or doorways in a circular pattern but not a totally connected circular ring as they are always shown in modern drawings and recreations. Almost more of some sort of portals arranged in a circular pattern but standing separate one from the next with no concentric rings all around the tops.
