How to Make Mushroom Powder | Easy DIY Recipe and Uses
Making mushroom powder at home is straightforward and allows you to add a boost of flavor and nutrients to soups, sauces, and other dishes. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
What You'll Need:
Fresh or dried mushrooms (shiitake, porcini, and button mushrooms work well)
Dehydrator or oven (if using fresh mushrooms)
Coffee grinder or spice grinder (or a high-speed blender)
Fine mesh sieve
Airtight container for storage

Steps:
1. Choose Your Mushrooms:
Select mushrooms based on your desired flavor. Shiitake adds a deep, earthy flavor, while porcini has a rich, almost nutty taste.
If using dried mushrooms, you can skip directly to Step 4.
2. Clean the Mushrooms:
If using fresh mushrooms, wipe them with a damp cloth to remove dirt. Avoid rinsing them with water, as mushrooms absorb moisture.
3. Slice and Dehydrate:
If you have a dehydrator: Slice mushrooms into thin pieces, about 1/4 inch thick, and place them on dehydrator trays. Dehydrate at 110-120°F (43-49°C) for 6-8 hours or until completely dry and brittle.
If using an oven: Preheat the oven to the lowest temperature setting, usually around 170°F (75°C). Spread the mushroom slices on a baking sheet in a single layer, and bake for 2-3 hours, turning occasionally, until fully dry and crispy.
4. Grind into Powder:
Once the mushrooms are completely dry, let them cool to room temperature.
Use a coffee or spice grinder to grind them into a fine powder. You may need to do this in batches.
For an even finer powder, sift through a fine mesh sieve and regrind any larger pieces that didn’t pass through.
5. Store Properly:
Transfer the mushroom powder to an airtight container, and store it in a cool, dark place. Properly stored, it can last up to a year.
Tips:
Blends: You can mix different mushrooms for a more complex flavor profile.
Uses: Mushroom powder can add umami to almost any dish. Try it in soups, stews, sauces, or even as a seasoning for meats and vegetables.
