The Unparalleled Brilliance of Yu-Gi-Oh's Lore

I grew up playing Yu-Gi-Oh, and I remember enjoying it. I came back to it recently when my girlfriend started playing it. She showed me all these cards that were based off of real life myths... myths that I have talked about in relation to other franchises on this channel. These real-life myths were interwoven into the card game is absolutely brilliant ways. I had no idea Yu-Gi-Oh was capable of this level of sophistication.

Fun fact: In the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, when Siegfried (Yet another Norse reference) used the spell card Ride of the Valkyries, the show also played the song.

"El Shaddoll Winda" is also named like that because the girl in the artwork is named Winda. She appears in other stories of the Yu-Gi-Oh card lore too.

It’s absolutely intentional, there tons of card packs that reference things the artist in question is interested in.

Also if possible, i highly recommend looking into fate if your looking for some juicy amounts of references to fiction and history.
Maybe digimon, a lot of references there too but I’m not sure if the references are deep enough for your liking

Also, Qliphoth is a tree from the underworld in Devil May Cry 5. That makes me want to look back at the names from the enemies and weapons in the rest of DMC.

Yugioh cards draw inspiration from pretty much everything. For example, The Dragon Maid archetypes is based on the anime/manga series 'Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid', while Outer Entity Nyarla and Outer Entity Azathot are based on Nyarlathotep and Azathoth from the Lovecraft mythos. There's no limit on what they'll draw from, tonal consistency be damned.

This video is incredible, as someone who massively loves YGO ranging from its anime to the card game, and has always considered it to be a far better written piece of storytelling than given credit for. Seeing such an in depth analysis into facets of its range is incredible! I would adore to see more of these!

If you haven't read the Master Guide 5 storylines/Qli lore yet, go do it. This barely scratches the surface of how deep the religious connection goes- the Infernoids all named after demons, and the Qliphort all being named after both the Qliphoth AND assembly-level computer architecture!

If you dwell deeper in the various yugioh archetypes you will find alot of meaning in every one of them, also the stories that are yet to come to master duel, such as the dogmaticas, despias, the whole world legacy lore with the orcusts and all (that story is already present in master duel i think) Alot of religious influence behind alot of archetypes. The thing with the Qliphoth is also imagery used in the new Dragon Ball Daima with the new antagonists layer looking like an upside down tree possibly in the demon realm in the DB Universe. Maybe you can analyze the trailer and see if there are any symbols you recognize.
