Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United Tactics

Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United tactics explained.

In Bielsa, Leeds United have a coach who has taken a fairly talented squad, but without any genuine stars, and fashioned something that is both greater than the sum of its parts, and, when it works, superb to watch. Tactically complex and thought-provoking, and capable of devastating football with pace and precision, Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds has been one of English football’s outstanding teams this season.

Imagine the Premier League with Bielsa in it. Pep, Klopp, Benitez, Rodgers, Poch, Sarri, Emery, Nuno Espirito Santo... what a dream for premier league fans. I'd love Leeds to come to the Premier League.

On this day: Friday, July 17, 2020, Leeds United were promoted to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years.

Leeds United are arguably one of the biggest clubs in the Championship, and (dare I say it), one of the biggest in English football! I'd love to see them in the Premier League again!

When watching Leeds it looks like a mixture of total football, total pace and total carnage. Players switch position and they don't let up even with 10 men. Klich seems to be everywhere and the team is really fluid. However this sometimes is their downfall when they lose the ball, their defensive positioning is a bit off. If you catch them on a good day you'll need popcorn, great to see and always go for the win in the most stylish way.

Bielsa is a genius. An absolute genius. His first press conference where he pulled a dossier out of a load of different games from the previous season was incredible. Leeds are brilliant to watch and the way they press and defend is sensational

I can't believe we actually get to watch a Marcelo Bielsa side in the premier league this year. Fucking hell what a dream.

Should do the mighty Lee Cattermole, a tactical genius

This is a little bit similar to what I've seen with Ajax. Like de Jong dropping deep sometimes even playing like a 3rd CB

As a Leeds fan, I have been absolutely blown away by the quality of football this side have produced this season. The way the team works together is remarkable, I've never seen anything like it. Unfortunately, the last few games have gone to prove what we all knew at the start of the season - that there simply is not the individual talent in this team to drag us over the line when it really matters. The intensity is still there, the quality of the build up play has not changed. What's lacking is the cutting edge up front to really drive home the advantage. Put Brentford's front three in this team and we would have over 100 points, I truly believe that.

Hey, I've got introduced to this channel through Tifo Basketball, since I loved the thoughtful and detailed analysis you guys do over there. Just wanted to say what a delight it is to go through all your videos, new and old. I haven't touched a football since I was a kid, and that same thoughtful approach reignited something in me I didn't know was in there. I'm planning to watch the Champions League when I get the chance, and I just wanted to say thank you for the opportunity to learn more about the beautiful game. You do great work here, and I'm anxious for more.

I Love Leeds United, it has been a painful ride the last couple of weeks with losing automatic promotion to Sheff United. Bielsa has turned a squad last year that finished 13th into a strong automatic contending squad with only a couple of additions. In my opinion he is the greatest thing to happen to Leeds United in decades, and even if we do not gain promotion trough the play offs, i can only wish he will be still managing us next season as this season has been the most exciting season i have seen for at least 16 or so years. I can only dream of us getting promotion and having Bielsa managing us in the premier league, if anyone can do it, then is Marcelo Bielsa.

I hope Leeds can get to the Premier League this season, and hopefully if they do, the likes of Nottingham Forest and Blackburn Rovers can follow in subsequent seasons.

Imagine having a former PL winner, an ex-2 times European Cup winner, and one of England's most successful clubs being in the PL again alongside the current Top 6 and Wolves (which IMO will be a very competitive team if they continue to keep up their great transfers). How cool is that?

I really like the trend of CDMS dropping back almost as part of a back-3 and helping circulate the ball. It's a good rotation that allows a player to have a nice set of offensive and defensive contribution to the team. I know in a past Tifo vid, that he uses fullbacks as the outside centerbacks, which makes sense because the player has more skill at being mobile as well as being able to pass the ball up the sides.

I know Sheffield United uses a 3-5-2 with overloading centerbacks further up the pitch to help overload the wings. They rotate with the wingback cutting inside, and the midfielder dropping back. In some cases, centerbacks can cut inside to help overload. There are even moments when a centerback crosses across the pitch to the other centerback by the far post.

Overall, I love these tactical shifts and the whole Total Football, all these positions and roles that players have are meshing together in weird combinations to create overloads and rotations.
