Local scientists at the University of Washington have made an exciting discovery on the seafloor along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The same zone capable of bringing "the big one", a 9.0 earthquake to western Washington.

One has to admire Abby's enthusiasm and zest of the prospect of a 9.0 earthquake wiping out western Washington.

aahhh the media, the only place where they deliver apocalyptic news with smiles

It always amazes me how Japanese buildings are earthquake proof yet buildings on the west coast have virtually no protection or retrofitting

She does a good job emphasizing the difference between a new leak and a newly discovered leak. No sensationalism and communicates good information.

My wife and I moved to Washington State because of our jobs, then the 2001 earthquake hit and we were in the 21st floor. I went home, found out about the threat from the volcano nearby, about the BIG upcoming earthquake and the Tsunami expected with moved very quickly out of there. It may happen tomorrow or in a hundred years but I'm sure as hell not going to die there

Please don't forget...it is not just the magnitude of the coming earthquake, it is the length of time that the shaking goes on. If you've ever been in a major earthquake you know it feels like it goes on forever but it actually is usually less than a minute of shaking. Cascadia has been estimated at between 4 to 6 minutes. That will be forever. Good luck to all of us here on the Oregon/Washington coast! 😮

The sooner it happens the better the outcome will be and the higher the survival rate. The more this thing compresses the more energy will be released.

I don't know what she said in that warm journalistick ear candy, but it felt so warm and good and every thing is just fine.

I'd like to know the amount of sulfur dioxide given off. Sulfur dioxide when mixed with seawater becomes sulphuric acid and raises the acidity levels of the oceans.

I keep hearing about a "huge" or "giant" hole on the ocean floor spewing water but no one has said anything about the size of the hole. Is the hole 12 inches, 15 feet, or 30 miles or larger in size ??? How big is the hole ???

Seems as tho every hole known is a thermal vent, emitting heated water at extreme rates.Question is, where is the intake port(s)for that ejection?

Interesting, they finally found where the water being cooked out of the subducted crust is coming out. (That's what makes it so much cooler than just another hydrothermal vent.)

Many cities have been washed away like tortugua, alexandria, and many others!! People say that cali wont go in the ocean but history shows it is possible!!

Thank goodness modern research has made great strides in tectonics

The earths crust is approx 5-600miles thick, subducting plates drag moisture laden rock deep into the earth, which heats up & is vented as steam, fumeroles, gysers, thermal pools etc all around the world.
Please note the flow rate of this *leakage, there really is nothing to see here.

I remember watching a documentary about that zone. It covers a very large area of the west coast. Parts of British Columbia, Washington state, Oregon state and a large part of Northern California. The worse case would be for the entire part of the west coast to tear away and sink into the Pacific they said. I doubt that would happen in our lifetime but the area is over due for a big one they say based on historical past episodes. We could see a major earthquake out there any year now.
