Cristóbal de Morales - Missa pro Defunctis a 5. Complete with Score.

This requiem for 5 voices mixed (STTBarB), has been performed at the funeral of Phillip II of Spain (1527 - 1598), who died in 1598. The Requiem is probably written for the funeral of his father Charles V (1500 - 1558) or his mother Isabel of Portugal (1503 - 1539). It contains:

01. - Introitus: Réquiem aeterna 00:00
02.- Kyrie 06:06
03.- Graduale: Réquiem aeterna 12:00
04.- Sequentia: Dies Irae 19:19 & Pie Jesu 27:00
05.- Offertorium 28:40
06.- Sanctus 37:02
07.- Benedictus - 38:51
08.- Agnus Dei 40:02
09.- Communio: Lux Aeterna 42:40

De Morales combines and alternates the counterpoint - in using different voice-setting - with delicates homophonic sonorities. In the Offertorium and in the last part Communio we see the high counterpoint skills by De Morales used in and with a strong involvement of all voices both ending with a superb closure. The Introit consists out of 86, Kyrie 65, Graduale 127, Sequentia 32, Offertorium 196, Sanctus 48, Benedictus 25, Agnus Dei 50 and Communio 49 bars.
This Missa pro Defunctis was published in Christophori Moralis Hispaniensis Missarum Liber secundus in Roma, primera parte, 1544, Valerio & Ludovico Dorico and reprinted in 1551 by Jacobum Modernum, Lyon.

I remember the first time I heard Cristobal de Morales on the radio-- or rather, the first time I heard his name as being the composer of a choral work. I was fascinated by the beautiful, flowing lines. It has been too long since I last heard a work from this great Spanish composer. A stupendous work!

Morales is wonderful. And you get a surprise full rendition of the Dies Irae chant in the middle.

After listening to this wonderful, transcendental music, one may think better not only if God exists - and might wonder that a luminous, infinite and glorious world exists - though many times and in such a difficult way it is beyond our comprehension and lively perception. Five hundred years after Morales wrote this Missa, here it is: still functioning as an spiritual aspersion. Thanks for Jordi Savall and your upload.

Le pie jesu est un pur moment de grâce. Entre Palestrina et Josquin, certes, mais indubitablement en Espagne. Difficile de dire pourquoi, si ce n’est peut être cette imprégnation mystique partagée notamment avec Victoria quelques décennies plus tard ? Écoutons et partageons avec le grand Cristobal son intuition de l’éternité.

Muchas gracias por compartir esta obra tan seriamente compuesta, pletórica de amor e imaginación, con un conocimiento de la técnica que Jordi Savall lee de manera magistral, la parte de los gragorianos e incipits tiene un trabajo muy bello y creativo, espontáneo y muy docto, al mismo tiempo. Gran experiencia, gracias mil veces.

For a complete novice listener like myself I now get the strict Counterpoint makes for better more pleasing sound for the listener. And I first noticed it in the score as each of the 5 voices scores are different .
I find this amazing. No Motzart ever sounded like this. Or as beautiful
Jordan Savall conducting, not playing his treble da gamba for a change.

thank you for score and jordi. wonderful music for meditation and following the score ans sing silently.
a little but: the choral score kyrie and christe is not the one I hear: the e from eleison is the same tone as the start one, so is one more. I sing this music... :)
