Toronto’s medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa said Monday that the city had 2.632 total cases of COVID-19. Dr. de Villa added that 210 people were in hospital and 80 were in intensive care. There have been 92 COVID-19-related deaths.
Toronto’s top doctor also said Monday that there have been 50 deaths in long-term care settings, but said the city had started to see a slowing rate of infection, reflecting measures put in place to control the spread of the virus.
Toronto officials also confirmed that there were 25 cases of COVID-19 in seven different homeless shelters across the city as of Monday afternoon. Officials said to date there have been no COVID-19-related deaths at the shelters.
The City of Toronto, with the approval of the Ontario government, announced Monday it would open two new licensed childcare centres for the children of essential workers, on top of the four already in operation in Toronto. One of these centres opened Monday, April 13, at 34 Bathurst Street and another will open on 1125 Danforth Avenue later in the week.
The Greater Toronto public health units account for approximately 53.9 per cent of all COVID-19 cases in the province.
