The thermostat in the 13b actually regulates the flow through the entire engine. So if you remove the thermostat then the engine will just circulate the coolant through the front of the engine and not the whole engine

A large washer in place of the thermostat was an old trick to help slow the coolant down a little to let the radiator do its thing

You can also purchase a lower hose with a coiled wire or spring in it to prevent it from collapsing. Some cars came that way from the factory.
