Can missed periods cause swollen belly? - Dr. Teji Ashok Dawane

When somebody comes to us with missed periods the first and foremost thing that we would like to rule out is pregnancy. So what happens is even in pregnancy there are pregnancy hormones which begin to work up. Beta HCG and progesterone increases in the body which then causes the person to bloat a little and have that little bit of swelling sensation around the belly and lower part of the abdomen. If you are not pregnant then what happens is the missed period is causing accumulation of more and more female hormones in the body which cause irregular periods. This will also cause a little bit of swelling of the belly and the lower abdomen. So definitely missed periods can cause swelling or that sensation of the lower part of the abdomen.
