Is Jay Leno’s Garage big enough for the Big Boy?

The legendary comedian with a well-known passion for cars recently tried his hand at steel wheels, riding in the cab of Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive for an episode on ‘Jay Leno’s Garage.’

Union Pacific and the National Park Foundation welcomed Leno and his team on the iconic steam engine and Union Pacific’s heritage fleet cars during a tour across western Iowa in September – part of its Heartland of America tour covering 10 states over 8 weeks. Union Pacific is a key sponsor of the National Park Foundation, and the episode honors Union Pacific’s role transporting visitors to our nation’s parks, including Yellowstone, Zion, Grand Canyon and Death Valley, in the early days for their formation. Now, Union Pacific works to inspire the next generation’s love of the outdoors and curiosity about the world around them through the National Park Foundation’s Open Outdoors for Kids program.

This is as good as it gets. Thank you, Union Pacific, for bringing this magnificent engine back to life. I'm sure I'm not the only one that never thought we would see one of these ever run again.

What a great video. Jay was my favorite late night comedian, and I don't watch it since he left. I"ve seen Big Boy up close and personal, and its size, power, and ambiance is beyond words.

Last year, I sat in the exact seat Jay Leno just sat in. Wow, I feel as though I already have some sort of connection with him. Of course, I know Ed Dickens personally and he’s a super sweet guy. Super cool indeed.

Thanks to Jay for sometimes going way out of the box. I remember one of his weekly shows from a couple years back when he showed us a big Case articulated farm tractor with rubber tracks, and he drove it around the neighborhood, with a Case instructor to help him out. Now he's in the Big Boy, 500 tons of iron and steel. The only thing more outside the box than this would be if he flew in a Boeing 747 or B-52.

I remember a long time ago when the UP Big Boy # 4006 was retired and donated to the Museum of Transportation in the St. Louis area. A friend, his mom (the car driver) and I went there and got a tour of it by the Museum's director. It was a slow day, so she took us for a tour around the museum grounds. The Big Boy cab was one big accumulation of levers and dials and knobs and gauges, and I remembered at the time thinking how difficult it must have been to get the engine up and down the tracks. My only regret about the U.P. Heritage program was they decided to transfer ownership of the U.P Challenger 3985, a 4-6-6-4 articulated to a private group. I understand that they just didn't /don't have the staff to keep everything running, But when U.P restored the 3985, that's what started the current restoration craze of so many other vintage railroad engines and other equipment.

My son was ecstatic when Big Boy came to his station. He is a conductor. He would have lost it seeing Jay Leno. He said Big Boy’s crew is amazing. He had worked with them a short bit in Cheyenne, where Big Boy is stationed. The head engineer came to our town in Texas and talked about what it took to get Big Big in pristine condition. He literally slept next to Big Boy until it was finished. Such commitment is unheard of today.

You'd think his manager would keep him away from fire?

And somewhere, just to the right of Jay Leno waving Big Boy away, stands me.

The folks you find in the middle of Iowa.
