Why Verstappen’s latest Norris F1 battle went too far

Another Formula 1 race, another controversial clash between Formula 1 title rivals Max Verstappen and Lando Norris - only this time it was Verstappen who got penalised, and heavily too, as Norris declared Verstappen’s driving “dangerous”.

For McLaren, this will probably feel like justice finally done - as the team believed strongly that Verstappen should have been sanctioned during the United States Grand Prix for forcing Norris off the track during their late-race battle for third place.

The team felt so aggrieved they launched a right of review petition, asking F1’s stewards to reconsider their decision to penalise Norris five seconds for overtaking Verstappen off-track at Turn 12.

That petition ultimately failed, but it kept the issue of F1’s racing guidelines, and what constitutes fair driving, very much in the spotlight during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend - and change is now surely coming after the drivers met with the FIA and agreed to discuss alterations to F1’s racing guidelines at the Qatar Grand Prix in December.

Meanwhile, Verstappen and Norris stress-tested the limits of the current rules again.

"The FIA doesn't think Max Verstappen is exploiting a loophole, but he has highlighted something that might be missing from the guidelines."

That's the definition of a loophole

Carlos Sainz act more like a champion in this race.
He give back the position right away, when he's off the track. He has the confidence he can regain the lead once again, as he did later.

Verstappen using sim-racing tactics in real life…

Suppose Magnusson did something like this... How many points would be taken for dangerous driving?

Verstappen is driving against Lando like he did in 2021 vs Hamilton. "I win or we crash". Especially like in Saudi Arabia and Brazil.

this is just the result of the FIA allowing this type of racing. No Consistency, no hard pentalties anymore.. its just a shitshow at this point, this has nothing to do with fair racing.

Rules should be clearer and then should be officiated consistently

Y'all don't realize that this actually saved him points instead of costing him points. Yes he would've probably finished p4 if he didn't make those moves, but lando had a high chance of getting the win, which would've meant more points loss for max. So max decided to get back in front of norris even if it cost him a penalty, so he could get norris out of reaching distance from the ferrari's.

Not enough people are talking about how max was concentrating on letting off the brake and pushing lando wide so much that he very nearly collected sainz on the exit of turn 4 as well

Verstappen has always been a dangerous driver. Everybody just forgot this because he has only been racing the clock the last few years since red bull was so advanced. Now everybody caught up and he is back to just forcing drivers off the track. Nothing new.

He’s been doing this for years, difference is he actually got a penalty this time

Alonso said it best. "All the time you have to leave the space". If there is a car there, be it the front wing or the whole car, you can’t realistically put another car in already occupied space.

Here is how the rules should be:
You need to stay on track.
Every car is entitled to the space is occupies as per the laws of physics.

Shows how his frustration from Mode 3 which drained his battery caused him to do something so irrational, Lando did handle the situation quite calmly infact.

Nice to see you guys are finally coming around to what we have seen for years.

i honestly don't really understand why max is showing such clear desperation to keep norris behind him. he has a fairly comfortable lead in the championship. getting himself penalized when he could just let lando past and lose a few points when lando has clearly run out of time to catch up in the standings is just beyond me

Verstappen seems to think passing him should be against the rules.

You only need one rule on overtaking, always leave the space.

This isn’t NASCAR.
