Building a Cheap Quadcopter At Home (1) - Lift Off

In this video I try to build a basic platform for a quadcopter with salvaged motors from small axial fans and some other household items.
These (like all PC-Fans) are powered by BLDCs (Brushles DC-Motors). You cannot reverse their rotation by changing the POLARITY . That only works with old fashioned "Brushed DC Motors".
Model number of the Server Power Supply: HP - DPS - 700 CB-A.
I recommend you not to buy this unit simply for this unit . A wide variety of fan -motors, salvagable from several devices / manufacturers could be used.

Stop telling me, that the direction of the rotation of the motors can be reversed by swapping the two wires. That is only true for "Brushed DC Motors". These are "Brushless DC Motors" with an integrated driver circuit inside the black plastic enclosure. The driver circuit only works with one polarity!

To understand the difference between the two motor types, watch this video:

There is just something hysterical hearing "ghetto heat shrinking with a girly lighter" in your German accent... I like the subtle humor while learning a bit... nice job.

unlike most if the people commenting.. I liked your solution, quick and dirty. I realize that you were just doing a proof of concept but you might want to first pick your power source so you can build a machine within the limitations of your weight. that said...I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
with all the motors you have you might want to consider a hex or octa copter

You honestly did a good job.. Your explanation matches what you did.. Most people making bad comments didn't watch this video with much attention, this is a good start

Heaven! Your vid is just what I needed to convince my family I am not mad because of scavenging every printer and drive I stumble upon on the street ;-) Not sure if I will decide to replicate this 'copter but I will stay tuned to your contributions.

I liked how you created the structure out of wood skewers! I didn't think of that. Also, your testing arrangement is ingenious!

My new best friend, you answered questions I had and corrected my direction.
For lightweight I kept thinking styrofoam but fragile trade off. But wood skewers? it's so simple it's brilliant.

no Idea why so many thumbs down on this.... this was just a crude proof in theory. ... well done!!!.. why kill hours drilling holes for the props, balancing ..control boards.. ect ect.. to find out the motors don't even have enough power to lift it ect..  ....  .I was just looking into using hard drive motors for the same ..thing.. and I'll end up making the same crude contraption..well tad more to control the hd's though.. ..and the hard drive motors have a screw hole already dead center =).. cept they way heavier..
well i do have to add one "you should of"  ../ you should of put some kind of weight on it like 50g's ect to see how much power you would actually need.. to lift a small lithium battery
