THIS is the Coles 4038 Ribbon mic. Originally manufactured in the 1950’s by the BBC and still built today with the original specs, this historic microphone has literally stood the test of time. The iconic 4038 was famously used as drum overheads by the Beatles and LED Zeppelin and it’s become a go to for many recording engineers and producers around the world today. Steve Albini stating that if he could have just one mic, this would be it. Whether it’s drums, piano, brass or guitar cabinets, the coles 4038 imparts a charming vintage character that’s hard to beat. Unlike other microphone alternatives, these have a smooth yet defined top end, while maintaining that large, rich low end associated with vintage ribbons. At nearly $1500 a piece, buying a piece of history like this is a significant investment, however I think it’s one well worth the price of entry for any serious recording engineer or studio #SHORTS

Just to be clear, the large BBC mic you show is not the same. The Coles is a massive refinement upon that design, including the shape of the headbasket.

And yet, it's likely used 99% less than a good ole' SM58 😂
