Totally love the ToneBoosters BusTools. Also like the plugins from Variety of Sound.

I usually use the Vintage Tape Module from Ozone 8 Advanced or the Exciter with tape saturation settings. Works great for me.

For tape-style simulation I like: Airwindows "ToTape5" and "Iron Oxide5". Both are free, VST, Mac and PC. (I'm a poet and I noet.)

I throw a FerricTDS on just about every track. I set the saturation knob to around 75 percent and the dynamics up to around 25 percent. It seems to really help glue all of the tracks and ads just a tiny bit of saturation across the entire mix. I dislike that it's a 32 bit vst (one of the only ones I still use.) but for a freebie I love it!

About the input efx question: why not using a gentle comp (like cla-2a) and/or a channel strip with gentle comp and eq to shape the input signal to have the recorded wav more "ready" for mixing?

Should you put kick & snare on one track and cymbals on another ?
