Hey everyone,

This is Stephen Woolston coach and trainer again, this time talking about cognitive biases in decision making. Specifically, what is survivorship bias and how it affects performance.

We’re going to look at survivor bias and motivation, or more accurately, how we suffer survivor bias demotivation and the way it impacts us as people who want to be emotionally resilient professionals.

TELL ME YOUR EXPERIENCE OF SURVIVORSHIP BIAS.

This is absolutely something to keep an eye out for. There’s a lot of snake oil being sold by people who actually have been successful doing what you’re trying to accomplish.

I had never heard of survivorship bias before, Stephen, but I have totally experienced it! I always strive to be an emotionally resilient professional, so sometimes it's hard to remember that there's usually quite a bit of failure before success! Very enlightening!

Thanks for this video. Such amazing nuggets:
-"failing to consider what we can learn from those who didn't succeed."
-"when we get into thinking others are doing better than me because they are the most visible...it will get de-motivational"
If you want to be emotionally resistance, you need to get over this idea of survivor bias! Remember that survivor bias overthinking and de-motivation is what's going on!! You're seeing 1% speaking and not 99%.

We tend to forget that all successful people also had many failures until they were successful. I have fallen for it, so what I did was I tried not to think about and I kept on moving forward and push towards what I wanted.

I never knew survivorship bias was the name for what I feel like I've been going through recently. Your videos are so insightful!

I've never heard of survivorship bias. That was very enlightening and helpful. It's hard not to focus on those amazing success stories without paying attention to the fact that those results aren't at all typical. Thank you!

I remember learning about the concept of failing forward and thought it was crazy. It took time until I realized how instructive failures or myself and others are. I didn't know that was part of survivor bias.

Oh yes, I've fallen victim to survivorship bias too! Very informative video Stephen. It can be tempting to compare yourself to everyone else and feel like you'll never get there! Being aware of survivorship bias and recognizing when this happens so that you can change your responses will help a great deal.

The thing that helped the most was to stop comparing myself to anyone but me. It's only important that I'm making progress, not whether I'm keeping up with others. There's a greater peace that comes with that attitude, which allows for greater focus and satisfaction. This is a terrific topic Stephen!

Great video on survivor bias, Stephen. You're so right that only studying the successes isn't sufficient to figure out the differences between successes and failures.

I can really relate to this. My husband has been dealing with this recently having had many people let go from his company and him being one of those who remained made him feel this survivor's guilt and bias. Great info!

This is the first time I am hearing of supervisor bias. I can definitely see how it impacts your job and when I really though I realized I had a lot of supervisors and managers who were subject to this. Great video

This is my favorite of your videos! It's so true that just looking at the successes which is what people share most of the time doesn't give us a realistic view of things and can be so discouraging

Absolutely. I definitely find myself assuming that everyone else has had similar experiences as me. Thanks for sharing.

This is so thought provoking! I never thought of it as survivor biased. It reminds me of FOMO or Comparison syndrome.

so many good point. I have heard a lot of stories from successful people or celebrities about their journey and the always mention the struggle and the rejections. it never fell in to their lap. they worked hard and them become successful.but you got me thinking that I need to do a bit more research and get motivated.
