I remember as a child in the 70's the biggest school fear was a fire, we drilled for this weekly. Somehow the fire-code and security need to come up with a solution that doesn't benefit the criminal, or risk a catastrophe.

When my granddaughter was in school, her high school would lock ALL doors
after the students were in for the day. They had a camera and a system
to communicate on the front door. Once someone came to the door, they
could see them, ask the person why they are there AND other questions if
need to. If they were satisfied with their answer/answers, they
directed them to another door. Once the person reached that door it was
unlocked, they entered into the school office....I am adding this...If
need to they could have them enter into a very small room that is very
secure with bullet proof glass and a communication system, making sure they do not have any
weapons, then buzz them into the office.

In high school we could bring our guns to school and leave them in our cars during hunting seasons. There were more guns and ammo in that parking lot on a given day than a fun store
