EP 180 Saxon - Madame Guillotine
"Madame Guillotine" is a song written and recorded by the current line up of Saxon (Biff Byford, Brian Tatler, Doug Scarrat, Nigel Glocker and Tim "Nibbs" Carter) for the 2024 album "Hell, Fire and Damnation" which reached the top 20 UK albums chart on release. Nibbs has also been the band's bass player since the late 80s.
For this song (and most Saxon tracks), tune to E flat Standard (Eb / Ab / Db / Gb)
Signal Chain: Ibanez SR600E into Palmer PAN -1 passive DI box into MOTU 8Pre interface into Reason 12
There are three distinct elements to the bass part of this song. The first is the bass intro which I played with a pick and used overdrive from the Scream 4 effect processor before running into an instance of Kuassa's Cerberus bass amp simultator in Reason. The rest of the song is then played using fingerstyle. The tone consists of a compressor to even out the dynamics of my playing into a Scream 4 to emulate the effect of using magnetic tape and then into Cerberus. When the track moves into the interlude segment just before the guitar solos, I cut the audio from this section to another track, normalised the output and then treated it with chorus and a small amount of delay to provide depth and movement. I've noted these changes in the transcription.
