A plunge router base lets you lower the router bit into the material gradually, making controlled cuts to your desired depth. There are so many ways to set these that it can get confusing, but here’s my sure-fire way to get perfect cuts every time. After installing your bit, plunge it against a flat surface to set your starting point. Set the turret to the lowest setting and press the depth rod against it. Then, adjust the depth indicator so it’s just below the zero line.

Next, raise the rod until the indicator matches the depth line you’re aiming for, and tightly lock the rod in place with the knob. Now, rotate the turret until it can’t be rotated anymore and make your first cut. With each pass, turn the turret to the next position until you reach the bottom depth. This staged cutting approach prevents overloading the bit which will add life to your router.

As long as your measuring tape is accurate, this method guarantees perfect depth cuts every time. It’s a quick and reliable way to ensure consistent results with your plunge router, whether you’re working on deep mortises or fine detail work.

Hey Makers!

I know I'm not breaking new grounds with this idea...and you may even see this way as listed in your directions to use your plunge router, but I've seen so many strange, inaccurate ways to set these that I thought I'd make a quick video.
