Downy Woodpeckers and Yellow Bellied Sapsuckers return to the Backyard on the same day and on the same tree during the Great Backyard Bird Count - the woodpecker miracle! In general, birding in the Backyard has been slower in the past year and the cheerful sound of the Downy Woodpecker in particular has been missing for some time. That unmistakable high-pitched call was the first thing I heard this morning! For a sample check out:

I live in middle Tennessee area and have downy and red bellies which come everyday to feed on my Suet and peanut feeders for them. They are so much fun to watch, I hope yours keep coming around for you.

Wonderful sightings, I bet you were thrilled to see them. :-)

It looks like today is the day for woodpeckers. While watching out my back window at the food I have scattered about, I was very fortunate to have three Down Woodpeckers in sight at once coming in to feed at my suet feeder. (Gads, I sound like a Topper...)

I have a suet feeder attached to my window by suction cups so I can see them up close. They are such beautiful little birds.

Thank you very much for all of your videos!

Here in Va. both the downy and red belly woodpecker hit my sunflower seed feeder. The Red Belly will hang from the bottom and hook his head up to grab seeds. We also see the pleated woodpecker in the next yard on a stump every now and then.

While haven't seen many downys or hairies (latter I have only seen twice and it was most likely the same individual) which I used to see multiple times a day in the summer/fall, the red belly who just started coming by a few months ago constantly hangs around the neighborhood and my feeders.

That is so funny! Downys and Hairys are the most common WP's in my yard! Lovely video! Sorry I haven't been watching youtube that much, been busy getting footage on vacation down here in SC!

Do you know the name of the bird making the song starting loudly at 1:34?

Blue Jays imitate other birds? That’s amazing? Why do they do that?
