What's going on with Sergio Perez?

Sergio Perez has seen a dip in form lately and despite winning a couple of races this season, something just seems off. Sergio Perez seemed to break the Red Bull second driver curse since he joined in 2021 with a number of solid performances, becoming the ideal number 2 driver to partner Max Verstappen. But during the 2023 F1 season, his dip in form has seen him miss Q3 on 4 occasions, and more recently, 3 times in a row. So are Checo's days at Red Bull numbered? Or is this being blown out of proportion? Enjoy!

Max completely snatched his soul in Miami. He qualified pole with Max down in P9 and was primed to take the championship lead for the first time. He had almost the entire crowd backing him and he even stated that if it was a normal race (no safety cars, no incidents) he shouldn't even *see* Max. Well guess what, it was a completely clean race. No yellows, no VSCs, no safety cars, no red flag restarts. Yet Max completely trounced him.

He has been tilted since, mentally destroyed. High profile qualifying errors in the weeks after, no race pace, barely any fight. Max pointing at the number 1 after Miami has got him choking hard. Especially funny because Anthony Davidson said that to beat Max, Checo needs to get in his head. Well, the reverse happened and Checo has yet to mentally recover. Max has him on a leash.

He put too much pressure on himself. Ever since he stated that he's challenging Max for the title (after his win in Baku) his performances have been dismal

Max broke him in Miami. Remember before the race him saying he would not see much of Max in the race. He then got humiliated, as Max put in faster laps on 30+ old hards then he did on fresh hards.

Checo: Ima fight for the championship.

Also Checo: Damn, Q2 got hands

Since Perez's dad compared Perez v Verstappen to Senna v Prost it's been like Senna v Mazepin.

We don't expect him to beat Max. We just want him to qualify into Q3 which is the bare minimum in the RB car. Even Norris and Ocon driving slower cars have made Q3 in last 3 races. Perez has massive stage fright and mental fragility.

He's getting a reality check. Man started flying a little too high without anything to back up his big talk and now he's suffering. It's a shame, but it was inevitable.

Being Max's teammate is tough, of course, but lately Checo seems to be under more pressure from Danny Ric's presence than Max's. In the videos that RB uploads, Max and Danny seem to be having fun, but Checo looks uncomfortable, like a third wheel. He is kind of off these days. I like him as a driver and hope his performance improves. 😢

As Horner said, he needs to stop trying to beat Max. All it’s doing is leading to big errors and embarrassment.
He needs to concentrate on beating the Astons/Mercs etc, something within his means.

I don’t think Yuki is ready. He is doing better now but he only just found his feet and I think throwing him into the RB pressure cooker now will undo a lot of his good work. I would love to see Daniel get a crack at it but I don’t know if that will be their long term plan.

I think Albon is in the running also. He's improved massively considering the car he has and I think he'll now be ready for a RedBull seat, unlike before.

Nothing really, this is who Sergio Perez has always been. I'm not trying to be harsh either, just real. He has 3-4 really REALLY good races per year but then struggles on the more traditional tracks. We'll eventually get to Singapore and he'll have a banger again and people will be like "whoa maybe RB sabotaged him" and then we'll get to Mexico(sorry) and Max will dominate him again. This is the cycle of Sergio Perez, it's nothing new.

Maybe we underestimate Max his ability to drive the car at 100% of the limit. Maybe the RBR is not that dominant as we think but it could be Max that is just outperforming his RBR car as he outperformed that car in the past so many times. No teammate could even match Max his pace, Ricciardo in the beginning but Max was very young then.

I think the RBR car is dominant, but mostly due to Max his capabilities. Checo is a good driver, but no special one. He compares himselve with Max and that is wrong. Max is just so much better then Checo. Max is a once in a century driver. Maybe the best ever. Lewis and Senna are up there as well. But raw performance. There is no driver that matches Max his speed on a 2nd lap in any race out there.

Were other drivers need time to get used on grip and track he is on the limit every time at once. Only special ones can do that.

Checo ran out of talent in Miami. Checo: "Is Max struggling?" Engineer: "No, he's managing." End of story. checo is supposed to take points off the competition and finish second. Now he's finishing 6th...just like 2021. Lando and Max would never have beef as teammates, Lando is Max's "boy". The answer is Lando...or Perez. Perez needs to get his mojo back.

A Norris v Verstappen at Red Bull would be a Red Bull rebrand of Rosberg v Hamilton. Two friends turned bitter rival teammates, one is the talent of his generation, the other one is not quite on that level, but is good enough to give his rival a lot more than a headache and a run for his money.

the thing that bothers me the most about this is hearing checo blame his shortcomings on everything but his own mistakes. saying it was a lack of pace when your teammate finishes 25 seconds ahead of you is insane. you just cant blame the machinery for that, mate

garfieldbrooks

He just can’t afford to keep making these mistakes because it’ll only affect Red Bull in the constructors championship and potentially risk losing his seat

Its weird to hear him saying "We just didn't have the pace today/this weekend."

MATE, YOU ARE SITTING IN THAT PACE.

I don’t think Checo is that bad at all. One should not compare anyone to Max. And overstating the strength of the car is not fair either, not to Max and not to Checo. The truth is much simpler: the car is good, Checo is driving fine, and Max is from another planet

The thing about checo is, he constantly blames the team and barely takes responsibility. This makes fans make theories that rb is sabotaging checo…

But look at canada for example he blames the strategy but look how he couldnt make inroad on the ferrari.
