From Pino Palladino to Thundercat, there’s a TON you can learn from the bass players of Erykah Badu – and one, in particular, you may have overlooked.

The bass playing of Hubert Eaves IV on Badu’s live concert album can teach you everything you need to know about groove, pocket, and epic bass fills. With an intro built on Miles Davis’ So What (albeit with a swung hip-hop feel), Eaves offers a low register take on Paul Chambers’ classic bass line.

In today’s video we’re taking a look at what makes the iconic opening riff of So What one of the greatest of all time.

This bass line is on the track Rimshot, in case anyone is looking for it.

According to Victor Wooten the dorian scale is THE funk scale. Prince, James Brown and so many other funk songs are in dorian mode. It's the scale I grew up with 🤩

Hubert and Poogie are so deep in the pocket, you'll never forget listening to this. The "Funkin' for Jamaica" break during the Boogie Nights / All Night track is just perfection.

It's amazing to think that Paul Chambers was only 19-20 when he started recording with all of the Jazz greats, and only 23 when he recorded this album. I don't think I've ever seen a more impressive body of work from an individual who only lived to the age of 33. What an incredible talent.

For anyone looking for this track on Spotify, it's actually called "Rimshot (intro)", the first track on the album.

97, freshman year of college. The neo soul thing was awesome, great bass playing across the board. Maxwell always found killer bass players too.

The Erykah Badu live album and the Maxwell MTV Unplugged album (1997 too I think) featured amazing musicianship. 🎶🔥

This to me is the perfect live album. Poogie on drums just nailed it to the wall.

Bought this album on Black Friday, 1997! Just got off work and stopped by the record store and snatched it up. I had just bought her debut a few months before and had seen her on a televised concert and was knocked out by fact that it was a trio. Thanks for bringing this to the masses!!!

I truely believe this video series of you two jamming out some of the most classic bass lines of all time is one of the best things I've ever seen on YouTube. You guys are the best and thank you for the tabs!

The Dorian mode is one of the modes that I am hooked on completely… So much tasty stuff can be played with it! I just love any kind of ii-V vamp or something around that. “Kind of Blue” (especially All Blues) was my gateway into a slightly more modern version of jazz — I was a big fan of swing and neo-swing, and then I heard All Blues…

Erykah Badu Live, one of my favourite bass albums ever. Bass player was Hubert Eaves IV, and I have never been able to find out anything about that guy.

So glad you guys are giving props. If I have a difficult gig coming up or if I’m in any sort of musical rut I listen to this album for inspiration to try to push myself into this zone of pocket excellence and musicality! Heck I’m going to do that right now!!!
