It used to be in the olden days that when a new album launched, there would be significant revenues generated right away as fans rushed to buy the CD.

No longer today. In today’s streaming world, fans can instantly listen to your new album once it drops, but there’s very little to show for that in terms of royalty revenue.

But what if there was a super simple trick to drive actual revenue from your next album release?

In today’s Indie Music Minute, Disc Makers CEO Tony van Veen shares a simple (and affordable) tip that will help you drive revenue from your next album, explains how profitable it can be, and does the math on exactly how it works.

You don’t want to miss this secret!

Yep, I just did this (started with signed CD pre-orders back in March and shipped them in April) with my new album (out on streaming June 16th) and have already sold out on my disc makers order of 1, 000!

Great idea. People need to slow down and enjoy the physical piece and support the artist like the days when we bought albums vinyl. Liner notes, photos etc. Streaming has dented the music and the way people consume music.

I recently discovered your channel and I genuinely enjoy the content.

Yup! I just did this at the beginning of the year. I was able to fund the end process of my album and the production of the first 100 cds by friends, family, fans and supporters preordering 50 copies. Now I only have a handful left! It’s a nine song album and only three songs are released so the tactic has worked well!

We just started suggesting this as well with the cd's. Even taking it as far as, suggesting to download the music first, stream after! - Keath

This is a good idea. I never release an album without producing physical copies. It just doesn’t seem like a release to me. Obviously, there is way more profit in selling physical copies. However, I don’t think you’ve been to the post office in a while. Two dollars per desk to mail is way underestimating the cost.

I love it. Thank you. Spotify is a digital dead-end (regarding superfans, at least), so this strategy makes SO much sense. You've made me reevaluate...I might just be going onto my digital distributor account today and moving back the DSP live date for my next album. This dovetails PERFECTLY with the overall superfan-focused changes I am implementing in my marketing these days.
I'm thinking of going for a 4-week gap before DSP live date, actually.
I'm already in convo with an awesome Disc Makers product specialist about THREE different CD/Jacket projects to hopefully go into production in the next couple of weeks.

Excellent idea. Small, easily followed ideas like this are crucial to making money in music today. Streaming alone is NOT going to cut it!

This is super helpful! I love how simple and straightforward it is. I have a mailing list that has sat idle for a while. I prefer to put more effort into making music and as little as possible into marketing it, and this is an enticing, yet minimal effort way to at least keep my records business in the black each year.

Been doing this for quite a while. It does work, but there has to be some follow-up after the new wears off.

We want nothing. No money. Nothing. We are all so grateful to be able to document our spiritual work in the material dimension. Amen. Nice deck. Nice plants. Yet again: a new, physical environment in which to preach the material dimension.

What about the studio-costs? In Austria recording, mixing, graphics aso. cost me about 6k to 10k Euros ... including 1000 CDs. To have profits it takes a while.

Hey Tony, if you’re the CEO, maybe you can help me get some help with two weeks old open tickets I’ve had with CD Baby about my album which just went live TODAY - except there is some kind of problem with Apple Music/iTunes where it says “deliveryERROR”
Apple responded to my inquiry, but says you guys have to fix it on your end. Can you please get someone to respond to my tickets?

Pre-Biden shipping costs might’ve been $2.
