That would be sage brush. The plant your smelling, I'm glad somebody else likes it other than me. Most people hate the smell haha. Also wanted to say, if you go north from gypsum up into those mountains you keep looking at it is magnificent. That's steamboat springs/Colorado River headwaters area. One of my favorite places in CO. Hopefully you make it out there sometime.

When the heater isn’t working, you could use rocks to stay warm. Throw some large, flatter rocks into a fire for a while and then if you put them under a blanket with you it’ll help hold the heat. I don’t think it’ll work all night, but at least long enough for you to fall asleep comfortably

I have heard some experienced hunters hunters/campers say that if you get a hat and sew like felt eyes on the back of it a mountain lion will be less likely to jump on your back

If you go to one of the National Forest Service office, they can hook you up with some topo maps. You may need them if you get yourself in a situation in the back country. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us and for appreciating the smell of the sage brush. I grew up near there and spent summers in Leadville with family, so this is ol' home week for me!

Very beautiful views in the mountains! One thing to remember about mountain lions, they are bigger versions of domesticated cats, so if you’re riding your bike they are going to be afraid of the noise and will stay away. If your bike breaks down then yes, you’re vulnerable.
