Terry Bogard (テリー・ボガード, Terī Bogādo) is the main protagonist of the Fatal Fury series. He has appeared in every Fatal Fury and King of Fighters game, and is one of the characters of choice to symbolize the company in crossover games, merchandise and publicity. He appears to fit many Japanese stereotypes for an American character in appearance, personality and speech (his in-game vocabulary is usually limited to American colloquialisms, such as "Okay!" and "Hey, c'mon, c'mon.").

Andy Bogard (アンディ・ボガード, Andī Bogādo) is a video game character in both the Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters series of fighting games by SNK. He is Terry Bogard's younger brother. His official nickname is The Human Weapon.

Joe Higashi (ジョー・ヒガシ, Jō Higashi or 東丈, Higashi Jō) is a character in both the Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters series, used mainly for comic relief. He is currently dating Lilly Kane, a relationship which her brother greatly disapproves. His official nickname is The Young Champ of Muay Thai.

Vanessa (ヴァネッサ, Banessa) is a character from The King of Fighters series who first debuted as a Striker in The King of Fighters '99 Evolution. She becomes playable in The King of Fighters 2000 as a member of the Hero Team. She is the first boxing female of the series and one of the first females to use this style in fighting games. Like Maxima, she was created as a middle-aged female to contrast the multiple teenage characters in the roster. Developers also mention their intentions to make her playable in The King of Fighters '99 though this didn't happen due to time constraints.

Ramon (ラモン, Ramon) made his first appearance in The King of Fighters 2000 as a member of the year's Hero Team. His moves and attacks are inspired by Tiger Mask. He was created to appeal to the Latin American fanbase and has a fighting style primarily surrounding around body slams.

Blue Mary (ブルー・マリー), whose real name is Mary Ryan (マリー・ライアン), is a character from both the Fatal Fury and King of Fighters series of fighting games. Blue Mary's first appearance was in Fatal Fury 3: Road to the Final Victory as a private detective. According to Neo Geo Freak, she is modeled after Android #18 from the Dragon Ball series. In the character popularity poll on Neo Geo Freak's website, she was voted as the fifteenth favorite character with a total of 857 votes.
