So true Joe. Your song "sing" motivates me to write every time I'm in a slump

Best songwriting advice I've heard in quite a while. It is something I already knew and keep in mind when I'm writing, but I love hearing others talk about it. Thank you.

Excellent and earnest encouragement to musicians and songwriters to remember what’s really important as we produce music. I remember this definition of music that I received many years ago in college:

“Music is a series of organized sounds that produces an aesthetic experience in the hearer.”

While music can do even more than this I appreciate this definition’s clarity. Thank you for your generosity and humanitarian concern. Music may be the only language that brings us all together. I feel honored to share this gift of language with you.

One of my memorable moments as a producer was pointing out the lack of emotion in a performance an artist delivered about time spent in a hospital room with his dying father. The performance was "perfect" but I didn't feel anything from it. After a few minutes of reflection he began to cry - too much to do another take. I brought out some red wine and chocolate and we sat a while. He tried again and couldn't make it through the song without breaking down. On the next take he did ok but his voice was cracking a bit. The last take was full of emotion and performed beautifully - that's the one on the record. It was a powerful session for sure. And Joe - thanks for all the vids - I've learned a ton from you about navigating Studio One.

Your song "Fighter" connects with me Joe, there's just something about the vibe of it, that makes me feel happy, and ready to face all the difficulties in life. You did a great job with that one 💪

So obvious that I've overlooked this completely! Wrote a song in '81 that ended with the lyric "Oh who am I trying to kid, without you around I don't know if I can live" and I my voice cracked as I sang it and to this day, every time I listen to it .. I'm right back in the emotion of that time. So glad you did this video Joe.

Excellent advice. The songs I have written that don’t connect with me will languish unfinished until I find a way to make them do so. That means that some of them may never do so and may indeed have to be trashed or re-written entirely.

Thanks Joe. Another stellar video chock full of GREAT advice. Recently I performed a song at a gig that I had written a few months ago. The song itself doesn't directly address specific instances in my life but evokes emotions in me when I get to the bridge. The overall theme of the song has to do with the age old theme of getting knocked down and getting back up again along with losing something or someone but I used the analogy of a tree and how you can strip the bark from the branches but it won't keep the branches all from flowering. When I got to the bridge I could hear and feel myself getting choked up. It really means a lot to me and if it had been a more intimate atmosphere I can surely see that it has the potential to really connect with the audience as well.

I'm also on second view, words of truth, Joe. I also tried watching the Vince Gill video, and was overwhelmed. The connection is everything. Thank you!

"I'm Not In Love" (10cc) hit me when I was in junior high. It captured perfectly how and what I felt for a girl that I could never get up the nerve to talk to in any romantic sense. She was a childhood friend for many years. That song is still a favorite for the sentimental and nostalgic emotions bit brings back to the surface.

Lovin it, connection is so important. The best way I find connection is to find inspiration. Being inspired so I can Inspire is my journey for this year. Thanks again Joe.

This is so true, I started creating music after I fall in love with avicii's music. Manny songs later I always try to remember why I love making music and I always try to put that in my own songs! great video Joe!

Great advice Joe. When I play a song that hits that emotional level everything improves. Playing, vocals, performance even the overall producing.

Just GREAT advise, and something we (being involved with music in any capacity) always have to remember. I continue to be greatly affected by one of our Dueling Mixes songs "Day Hides Night". I thought it was a great song at the very beginning of my mix. Then, very early in my mix process, I received a very traumatic and life changing medical diagnosis, and that song took on a whole new meaning, to where I still tear up whenever I hear it. I'm not one to pay much attention to the meaning of lyrics, but this one got me. It evokes a profound sorrow in me...(which I am still grateful for because that is what a song is supposed to do...either happy or sad...or anything else). Whether its just association because of the timing, or something deeper, it doesn't matter. It still brings RAW emotion to the surface! Thanks Joe!

Hey Joe...great advice. I have 2 songs that I want to mention here...Your song Fighter is particularly inspirational to me...just love the message and you keep it non specific enough that the listener knows exactly what you mean but it could be applied to anyone’s life and situation....very universal experience. Song #2 would have to Frankie Barranco’s Home. I did not know her back story when I first heard the song and actually got a complete different mental picture while listening to the song but it is so well constructed and so well produced it has become like my standard for what to shoot for when I’m writing. This may sound strange but there is a single chord that just gives me chills every time I hear the song...at the end of the chorus when she sings “But this broken world was never meant to be MY home”....that chord and pause on the word MY was so unexpected and fit well in the song it fascinates me.
