UNFOLDING GRACE THROUGH GENERATIONS
MATTHEW 1:1-17 | SHINE THOMAS

Author: Matthew, the tax collector.
Audience: Jewish Believers
Key Verse: The Great Commission; Mt. 28:18-20
Theme: The story of the King who comes, the King who is rejected,
and the King who will return.

Advent is a season in which we anticipate the coming of the
Messiah—the long-awaited fulfillment of God’s promises to His
people in exile. The Lord Jesus fulfills these aspirations: “I am the
way, the truth, and the life. I am the light of the world. I am the
resurrection and the life.
” (John 8:12; 11:25; 14:6). And God came to
redeem the ungodly.

Genealogy
• Source: Ruth 4 & 1 Chronicles 3:10-19
• Two Genealogies in the NT: Mt. 1 & Lk. 3
• Jesus is legally from the line of David.
• 1:1; 17: Three key figures: Jesus the Messiah, David, and
Abraham.
● Abraham– the father of Israel (Gen. 12:1-3).
● David– 2 Sam. 7:16 – the everlasting line.
● Thus, the Messiah, the great King from the royal line of
David, has come! Jesus is firmly located within God’s story
of redemption.

God’s Grace in the History of Three Eras
• Abraham to David
• David to Exile
• Return from Exile to Jesus
● David: The high point of Israel’s history and power.
● Babylon: The low point of Israel’s history.
● Return from Exile to Jesus: A mostly unknown period.

Four Women in the Genealogy
• Tamar (Gen. 38): Canaanite, involved in incest.
• Rahab (Josh. 2): Canaanite, from Jericho, immoral woman.
• Ruth (Book of Ruth): Moabitess, from Lot.
• Mrs. Uriah (Bathsheba) (2 Sam. 11): Likely a Jew, married to a
Hittite.
● All four women were Gentiles.
● Matt. 2: The wise men, Gentiles.
● Matt. 28: The gospel is for all nations.

Life Application:
• God is a God of grace.
• The grace of God is available to us through Jesus Christ.
• Jesus is the royal King, and He wants us to share in His royalty.
• God works with the ungodly, and He redeems the ungodly (Rom.
5:1-11).
