FREEBSD 14.0 Review :The Next Level

In this episode I take a look at the very latest release of FreeBSD version 14. Coupling it with a fresh install of XFCE 4.18. How stable is it? Plus can my 12 year old laptop handle it?

Thanks very much, I’ve been fascinated with FreeBSD for a long time. The first time I came across the OS I saw a book that was an introduction to the os. The cd that came with the book was a complete install and I was just amazed at the speed and efficiency of it. I kept messing up the os and had to reinstall everything and going back to the W operating system. I liked your video so much that I’m going to download the os again as soon as I can. FreeBSD is not much different from Linux. It works very well and stably even when we upgrade the system and programs.

Let's be honest, the Lenovo ThinkPad 520 (a 15 year old laptop) is probably one of the very few laptop where you can install FreeBSD and things works (ish). On any other laptop, especially the most recent one it's a completely NO-NO (ie forget about wireless, sound etc). It would be good if you could do the same video on a recent laptop.

Next level is transparent Wayland. Are you there? 😈 I'm almost there, but on FreeBSD (14.1, Nvidia gtx 750 ti, trying to get rid of Linux ABI. I hope that recompiling an open source Nvidia driver will help me in that) About Network transparency there are no ideas yet.

I tried many times to get FreeBSD running with a usable GUI but was unsuccessful, I was overjoyed too early to see your video, but there are a lot of works to do before I can get to that stage.

I'm on break and I'm bored and kinda interested in trying out FreeBSD. Can it handle the gaming hardware I have on my laptop? I am not gonna be gaming on it. BSD gives Linux vibes I like it.

It's definitely the worst version so far, with complete mess in graphic subsystem. Hardware that worked with v13 does not work with v14. Also there's a highest number of ports that can't be compiled I saw so far. I'm considering to drop use of FreeBSD entirely as this time building own system (except the very basic one) became near impossible.
